It would be far from shocking if a guy like Happ outperformed him. Those types of pitchers haven't fared well historically when it comes to league switches.

Paul Abbott went 17-4 lol. John Halama was the other guy, with Brett Tomko and Denny Stark making the other 7 starts, 3 after clinching.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BUF/1879.shtml Check out these pitching stats. For a more contemporary example, the 2001 Mariners had 6 starters make 155 starts. I believe a couple of the other 7 were made for rest purposes in September.

Change in mechanics. It's not all that uncommon.

Maybe not a ton of interest, but I think he would have added pieces here and there if given the option (ie. same salary as signing team). The trade route philosophy surely had at least something to do with lukewarm FA interest.

The one thing that bugs me is that people understand this now, but they bitched about it for years under AA and JP. Ten years between Burnett and Happ surely wasn't by design under 2 different regimes. I'm not trying to compare the GM's or anything, what's done is done, but it's really been a double standard so far. I'm glad that fans are finally getting a better understanding of the challenges of being a GM here.

I think that we've used up enough payroll that we are out on all of the pitchers you listed. I don't think any of them, especially the last 3, had any interest in signing here. If they did, we probably wouldn't have jumped on Happ so early. If we sign any more FA starters, I'd expect them to be more in the Blanton/Young/Cahill/Lincecum tier. The smart move in my opinion is to give Sanchez a legit shot to start in ST and add a late inning arm or two later in the offseason.

You can be certain that we'll still see starts from those guys if we don't add more depth. We're only 6 deep if they put Sanchez in the 'pen. Then it's Scott Diamond and Chad Jenkins.

I guess it's good, but I'd vote neutral if given the choice. I think Happ will give us value on 3/36, but there are other pitchers that I would have pursued first. I'll give Shapiro the benefit of the doubt for now and assume that checked in on these other guys and got a pretty firm 'no'.

It wouldn't simplify roster construction. Shipping out a solid #3 starter and trying to replace him with the same type of conventional pitcher simply to make a .2 WAR upgrade over Thole is infinitely stupid and complicated. There are available catchers that can receive a knuckler. Just because we don't have that information doesn't mean they aren't out there.

He was offered the Orioles GM job and rejected it.

If the contract is about 4/80 like I expect, Jose doesn't have to be a good investment at age 40. He has to be a good hitter at ages 35 and 36 and a decent hitter at ages 37 and 38. The contract would be perfectly justified in that case. We'd probably get surplus value, actually. It also plays very well into our contention window.

UZR has never had his fielding as a problem. In fact, it was a plus this year. I think a couple of bonehead plays are clouding people's evaluations. The range is a concern, but the bottom line is that he's an average or better fielder when the arm is healthy. He shouldn't kill us out there for a couple more seasons.
