  1. No, pitching is what happens before the ball reaches the plate. Defense is what happens after the ball reaches the plate. It's not difficult to understand. To me, including defense in a pitching award is like when they give out gold gloves based on how good of a hitter they are (ie. Adam Jones). They are two different things with two different awards. Why even bother having a pitcher gold glove if they are the same thing? The whole way they do awards is stupid, but it's difficult to understand why people can't agree on this simple concept. The Cy Young Award is for the best pitcher, the Hank Aaron award is for the best hitter, the Platinum Glove is for the best fielder, and the MVP is for the best overall player (a combination of pitching, hitting, and fielding). It's nice and tidy, one award for each aspect and a combined award. There is no need to combine pitching and fielding into one award.
  2. Change the scenario to add something that you would define as a bad pitch, maybe like a hanging slider.
  3. Scenario: Screaming liner up the middle, pitcher makes leaping catch. Great pitching? or Poor pitching and great fielding?
  4. Except Price also had better DIPS than Keuchel. I was really hoping Sale would win, just to get over the pitcher wins hurdle once and for all.
  5. If you're just going to make up s*** then I'm not going to bother. You know you're wrong.
  6. f*** right off, that's not what I said at all. Playing your position and holding runners aren't the same thing.
  7. Being elite defensively has absolutely nothing to do with being a good pitcher. It's a completely separate skill that is accounted for in another award. If you want to consider Keuchel for MVP then by all means include his defense, but that's not what the Cy Young Award is for.
  8. Are you drunk or something?
  9. Yes you can. The award is for how you pitch, the gold glove is for how you field. Should we give Pillar the Silver Slugger over Trout because he's a great fielder? One thing we can consider is the White Sox -39 DRS.
  10. Absolutely not, he was the third best pitcher. I'm almost certain that if he's 14-13 then he doesn't get the award.
  11. I was just starting to have some faith in voters and then they base award on pitcher wins again.
  12. Ok, you're going on ignore.
  13. Those exist?
  14. Me too, but not at the expense of getting what we need in the rotation.
  15. History suggests the latter.
  16. If I had to guess, they will ask us for prospects. Tellez, Cole, DSJ, Burns, guys like that.
  17. I suppose. I don't think they were ever going to get an impact player for him though. The PTBNL could change things for me.
  18. Indians, Padres, among others. Lots of teams need an outfielder.
  19. Is 7.5 million (with buyout) for a 1 WAR reliever really that much of a bargain? The PTBNL might be something too.
  20. I don't think it's wise to rely completely on xFIP in the case of elite groundball relievers. Look at xFIP-ERA for the top 5 groundball guys above Sanchez that I referenced earlier. Zach Britton: 0.59 Dennis Springer: 1.53 Jonny Venters: 0.75 Sam Dyson: 0.40 Brad Ziegler: 1.05 The first guy I always think of for groundballs is Chad Bradford, his is 0.49 I don't know if there has been a study, but there is a clear trend all the way down the list. This difference will only be exacerbated for Sanchez with the slow turf and excellent infield D.
  21. Barry Bonds never broke any steroid rules either. I hate the ambiguity in the voting process.
  22. Well we'll see how the rest of the offseason pans out. I don't mind him in the rotation to start the season, but he's awfully valuable as an insurance policy so we don't have to resort to guys like Scott Copeland again. If he pitches well, he'll get his starts like Estrada did last year. The labels don't mean anything to me.
  23. Solid move for both teams really. Brewers get some salary relief and the Tigers get their closer for a low cost.
  24. No, that's not what I'm saying. Ignoring his potential for now, I wouldn't trade a 23 year old reliever with very good peripherals in relief and 5 years of control for an average starter with 1 year of control and a salary of roughly 5 million. Now let's be truthful about what we have with Sanchez. Batters are hitting .149/.221/.191 against him and he has a K/BB ratio of almost 3 in two years of relief. Only 4 relievers in the past 20 years (min 60 IP) have a higher GB%. He's a real weapon out of the pen any way you slice it. Those types of pitchers don't grow on trees. I like Chavez and I already brought up trading for him in another thread today, but your personal biases are resulting in a pretty stupid trade proposal.
