It's a carrot and stick thing to get him in shape. "get in shape, fatty" is less motivating than "get in shape and we might let you play your preferred position again, fatty" -
There's a right price for him even without the extension. He has value above his 1/$21M (likely) salary and he is a difference maker. The trade cost in terms of prospects should not be tremendous but if most teams would happily pay Trevor Bauer 1/$30M to 1/$35M then it might be reasonable to say that Lindor is worth a prospect package worth something like $10M or $15M. That might only mean one good but not great prospect: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/an-update-to-prospect-valuation/ And then you can make the additional argument that if he is willing to sign an extension as part of the trade there is some value to that too. It saves the acquiring team the trouble of bidding for him.
