  1. No but it seems like Toronto has loftier targets than Walker, and Walker might be looking for too much money. He might end up with Toronto if they both are super sad and take their 10th choice to 2021 prom.
  2. I have always thought the Hall of Fame should be a historical place and it should have a separate wing for these delinquents. Elect them because they are great players and their stats warrant election, but do it under a separate ballot, don't give them a speech, and record the controversy on the same plaque as you record their accomplishments. Some of these guys legitimately don't "deserve" to be in the clean wing of the Hall. Schilling is not kept out because of his politics - he is kept out because he is objectively a nasty, intolerant loser. Mariano Rivera is one of the most conservative people imaginable but he's not a POS so he was a unanimous selection.
  3. I also like Stripling but I'm not sure it's fair the say that he was a strong middle rotation starter for a contending team. There were parts of seasons where he looked like that, but he also pitched out of the pen a lot and in a lot of starts he was not asked to go deep. The way for the Blue Jays to optimize Stripling might be to use him in the exact same way.
  4. When MikeM says "there are a lot more proven MLB arms out there" I don't think he realizes how quickly the SP list thins out. To me it's Bauer, big gap, Tanaka and the risky Paxton, big gap, and then a bunch of players who you can clearly prefer Sugano to consider cost.
  5. Sugano and all the recent Japanese pitchers to come over. NPB stats. Is it possible he has the best command profile of any of them?
  6. Yamaguchi was significantly worse in NPB than Sugano: (Sugano on the right) 3.75 vs 2.63 RA9 0.8 vs 0.6 HR/9 2.54 vs. 4.58 K/BB 1.24 vs. 1.03 WHIP Sugano has never had a BB/9 over 2.1. Gooch never had one below 2.7. Completely different pitcher archetypes. Sugano is a pure SP who can pitching and control the zone. Gooch wasn't even a starter his entire career in Japan; he is a pitcher with shotgun command but effective secondaries (at least they were in Japan). It's silly to try to project a player based on one comp anyway, but if you're going to you don't just comp two completely different types of pitchers. It's silly to look at positive comps too but at least Sugano's numbers are a lot closer to Maeda or Tanaka's in NPB. Note that even Kikuchi's career NPB stats are worse at a glance than Sugano's...
  7. If Gausman is this good going forward he could be one of the best SP available at the deadline.
  8. You need to stop listening to these radio stations, lmao.
  9. Yeah but they still say heyyyy
  10. They are talking about high school. I think he went to a private high school so probably not "big time Texas football" Regardless, Biggio might be a good anecdote for not making kids focus on one sport. He played baseball and football all through high school - that was probably great for his athleticism, generally speaking, and his sports brain (save and except any concussions or brain injuries!). I know this is a bit ironic but if all he does through high school is play baseball, does he still do all these little things right and perform beyond his physical tools?
  11. Sugano probably signs first though Can't see the Yankees moving on to secondary targets while DJL and Bauer are still possibilities. I dunno though.
  12. He hasn't played off of 2B long enough for any of those numbers to matter. He's crazy smart on the field. There's really no doubt in my mind that he could play various positions adequately.... remains to be seen whether he has the pure speed for CF or the arm for 3B, though, if we are talking about him being average or better at either of those
  13. Will probably just leave it because our in-season qualification numbers are pretty low. 10 and 3.
  14. The Dahl steamer projection does not pass the sniff test for me. He was above replacement level for three years, then bad for 24 games in 2020, and he's a pre-prime player. ZiPS says 0.7 fWAR in 429 PA and a 101 OPS+ which seems more reasonable to me but is still mediocre enough to support connorp's point. I think $3M is a little bit light based on the potential. If he was a free agent coming over from the KBO with no domestic track record I bet he gets more money. But MLB teams are probably anchored to the arbitration projections, in a bit of unspoken or subconscious collusion.
  15. For the record, nothing remotely interesting was stifled.
  16. Really not interested in knee jerk opinions about the Cleveland name change. The team is doing it after years of deliberation, everybody has their thoughts about racism and team names... I don't see how anything bemoaning the change typed onto this message board ends up being positive so I'll be liberally deleting any posts complaining about it
  17. In a league with a healthier labour dynamic the decision was made months ago with no deliberation. There are probably like five total stakeholders who don't want the universal DH in 2021... a minority of NL owners and Madison Bumgarner
  18. So the Rangers must love Lowe. His MiLB numbers were bananas... but so were AJ Reed's.
  19. I don't think it's that they don't want it... they probably either don't care or they support it. I think they just see an opportunity to use every little thing like this as a bargaining chip. They'll act like agreeing to the DH is acquiescing and they'll seek something in return
  20. Bauer made a video, I saw him tweet it out. Didn't watch it though
  21. I'd trust Ross and Mark with my life.
  22. The more I think about the less I want Lindor. Toronto can improve the team significantly with money alone, so that's what they should try to do. If that fails because every FA spurns them then maybe trading for Lindor and Carrasco would make sense. Groshans is too hard for me to evaluate. He could be either very underrated or overrated right now. I really have no idea what a fair trade would be but if I'm Toronto I want to be selling guys like Moreno, Hiraldo, Pardinho, Kloffenstein. I think most smart teams would realize that Gurriel has extreme value on his contract.
  23. It's really insane to think of the lack of competition on the market, generally: - Red Sox are dumpster diving or at best just sitting in the weeds, waiting for deals - Yankees seem interested in DJLM but other than that aren't acting aggressive - Dodgers are pretty set already, don't need much - In addition to McCann, Stroman accepting the QO ate up a good chunk of the Mets budget (same thing with the Giants and Gausman). Also Trevor May got real money from the Mets! - Bunch of win-now teams like the Phillies are broke. We have already seen the White Sox use the trade market rather than free agency. The Reds have made money saving trades already. The Indians are always broke. The Cubs are broke. The Astros are apparently even thinking of selling, Correa! The most aggressive team so far in free agency has been the f***ing ROYALS... Toronto should be able to take their pick of a lot of good players. The tricky part is they should remain patient...
  24. The Mets and McCann f***ed around for so long that I thought New York was just toying with him as part of intense Realmuto negotiations. I actually don't think that contract is tooooo awful. McCann has been pretty solid since 2019. $10M/yr is nothing for the Mets. His agent did well to get that 4 year term though.
  25. I don't think you have this right. The point of adding Carrasco to the deal, for Cleveland, would be to improve the centrepiece. If the market for Lindor is so weak that they can't land a blue-chip prospect for him, they'll pitch Lindor+Carrasco in an attempt to get the big package built around a blue chipper. Cleveland would trade Lindor for Groshans in a minute... Toronto would not do that deal.
