Kelenic up to an .781 OPS What a rollercoaster player Was amazing for one month in 2023 and then bad the rest of the year Now in 2024 he is doing the opposite. Was struggling for months (platoon player, not even crushing RHP) now all of a sudden he's a star in June. shrug

I kind of think he's already there He won't have an elite career WAR but his best seasons are better than Miggy, Pujols Like 2022 and this year 2024 are going to potentially both be ALL TIME seasons. How many players have two of those? I feel like only the legends do it. And he also has the 8 WAR, 52 homer 2017 How many players have 3+ 50 HR years, or a 50 and two 60+ HR years? If you ignore the steroid era guys, then it's... Babe Ruth? And nobody for the latter other than steroid guys. How many modern players have multiple seasons at 200+ wRC+? Almost none. Some guys have one. To see multiple 200+ wRC+ years you kind of need to look at old greats like Williams, Ruth, Mantle. Or Barry Bonds. Like, he has almost no peers when you look at specific accomplishments.

I think one key is to stop hitting the ball at the f***ing centrefielder Half of the roster seems to just lift flyball after liner after flyball to centrefield. The best defender and biggest part of the park.

It wasn't the same He was only bad in April 2022, every other month he was above 100 wRC+ The depth and length of his 2024 slump is quite different

Doubt they'd even do it then unless the peripherals look different he does have an okay K rate and a .315 xwOBA he really does not be this bad... I don't get it where did the pop go? maxEV is way down

I think even the negative nancies did not expect Toronto to be this bad The worst realistic expectation would be closer to a .500 team that misses the playoffs and has an awkward trade deadline decision this many games under .500 on June 26th with 5% playoff odds is horrendous when compared to preseason projections but, blessing in disguise if it can lead to the front office and coaching staff getting sorted and the rebuild process accelerating -

Yeah it's hard to disagree with anything he says I was cautiously optimistic on this team and Atkins before this season. I thought there was a chance that the offense in 2023 was a blip and the farm would prove stronger than people thought. I still think the "no playoff wins" thing is a cheap shot since the postseason in baseball is just plinko anyway. Turns out that 2023 was not a blip. There are fundamental issues with the way this team coaches and curates talent. Hard to see it any other way. Even if you give Atkins a pass on the MLB roster and say "bullpens are f***ing random and the offense being bad is mostly Vlad, Bo, Kirk, and Springer's fault. the GM doesn't play the games" that does not explain the piss poor drafting and developmental record which doesn't look any better as this season goes along. -
Yeah but it's specifically that 6th year that makes it an overpay. AAV not super relevant. 5/$125 would have been fine. Imagine of 2025 was the last year for Springer here? That would be nice. f***. Hopefully he can figure something out and at least return to a 1.8 WAR player. Just hit .250 with 20 homers please.

Yeah they could also ship out those guys I doubt anyone wants Bassitt for that money though... And Gausman, seems like a bad time to sell. I dunno.

Did they ever want to play here? Ryu was an overpay Springer was an overpay Toronto was likely the highest bidder for Gausman and Bassitt They paid IKF a lot in that market Turner was the worst of the offseason DH options. It doesn't seem like Pederson or JDM had any interest in Toronto. KK signed here because Toronto offered him playing time. Maybe that the team was good was part of his decision. They had to trade for Berrios and Varsho Bo and Vlad have not extended Nobody has extended. Not Jansen, not anybody. Nobody wants to play up here.

I don't really agree Berrios is pitching like an SP5 anyway Bo would be a big hole but the team would have lots of money to replace him with... some other position player in free agency Almost every other name is a pending FA anyway, or someone with a role that is easier to fill like a reliever Yeah the farm system probably cannot replace all of those names so the powers that be would need to start wheeling and dealing for depth on the margins

I feel like this is part of my ideal trade deadline. - Vlad extension and the number is not gross - Bo gets hot and gets traded - Berrios contract moved - Yimi, Jansen, Kikuchi all traded for decent prospects - Richards moved for whatever - Romano gets healthy and gets traded for a decent prospect - IKF, Turner, KK, Green all traded for a B prospect or at least have most of their contracts absorbed Caveat being that the trades need to be handled by Shapiro or Click, or otherwise in some way where it's not desperate Ross Atkins actually pulling the trigger on anything. And I would hate to see every trade get 2025 tunnel vision. Take some lower minors prospects with upside. Of course, all of that ^ will not happen. It's too many trades to pull off. But maybe most of it can happen. They probably would not be able to move most of the deadweight veterans.

It's positive (kind of nice) that the path was made so clear There is a blessing in that No more fooling around or pretending that they have a chance Let the healing process begin. Closure.

I would guess that ownership will just give their employee Mr. Atkins a mandate, such as: 1. field offers for these players, don't bother fielding offers for Vlad we don't want him dealt 2. any trade of player x, y, z needs ownership approval 3. any trade of players a, b, c only require Shapiro approval The real downside is that there is nobody who has to capacity, ability, and freedom to make the big forward thinking moves. To pull of a quick and decisive rebuild this team would probably need to trade Bo and also do very well in the trade. That is not going to happen. I mean it could happen in the offseason but by the trade deadline is such an awesome pinch point for sellers these days.

Can dump a couple of bats for picks or prospects Cedric Mullins David Hamilton Jorge Polanco Polanco the cheapest of course. Would need something of substance for the other two. Could also package 2/3 of them for 1 player. Alternatively could ship our Verdugo or Varsho in some kind of deal.
