That just says how much he is short at this point in time. For him to qualify he will need to accumulate at a minimum, the # team games left * 3.1 plus the 40 he is currently short.
It's possible but it will be close since it is unlikely he will play every game here on. This is what he is looking at:

Not 100% sure but I came across this at http://www.baseball-reference.com/about/leader_glossary.shtml
From 1957 to the present, a player must have 3.1 plate appearances per team game. Note however, that from 1967 to the present a player could lead if they still led after the necessary number of hitless plate appearances were added to their at bat total.

Blanco was given enough opportunity and never measured up. Apparently his departure was planned for just prior to his last start so no matter the outcome he was slated to be DFA'ed. I am glad Thole is being given a chance although I do not hold out any hope of seeing any above average performances from him. If there is then all the better cuz it would make enduring the games a little easier.
I know the Jays internal body clocks are still seeing EST and its really almost 2:00 am for them but this is ridiculous - last 6 batters down in 11 pitches.
Last night was a different scenario - Rogers had reached his pitch count since he was not stretched as a starter and at that point he had already allowed 2 on with 1 out. It was the right move in my opinion.
I guess that's a reasonable suggestion but the defence at the corner OF would be really bad with Lind and Cabrera - big OF and both will be slow there.
I saw where you mentioned it was different however you continued the sentence with "but how can Gibby justify sitting Lind in favor of DeRosa against lefties." How about accepting he did not have much of a choice since 3B needed to be filled and he wanted to also have both Cabrera and Encarnacion in the lineup.
Just where would you play Lind, 1B? If so, Encarnacion will have to go to 3B which still brings up nightmares for me. Where else, LF? If so, Cabrera will have no spot to play. DeRosa is there to play 3B.
Perez' position after unloading the ball looked weird however I found his pitches had a lot movement. I hope they can find a way to fix any control problems he may have without impacting his stuff. Wagner also looked good - lots of gas which supplemented the slider really nicely.
This is not the first time I have seen Bautista hold his back after doing that ridiculous back bump. Someone is definitely going to hurt themselves and the team just cannot handle any more injuries at this time - especially if it involves Bautista. I wish Gibbons would tell them to stop that crap before someone hurts themselves.
He appears to have a bad approach at the plate however when the pitcher makes a mistake in his wheel-house he can hit it long. He does not display patience but that could be because his pitch recognition and strike-zone awareness is lacking. What is a little weird is his strike-zone awareness should be better cuz he is right behind the plate with the umpire.
