  1. I wonder if this move is influenced by the Jays scouts. Perhaps they still think their is more in Smoak's bat, I don't see it personally.
  2. Fair point, but I still think it's a relatively low risk move to tender him for one year/3M.
  3. A torn MCL is a pretty routine procedure, I don't think the Jays are assuming that much risk.
  4. Not sure whether to call mods or call stupid?
  5. Why? He is a replacement level starter and ace reliever. It seems like an obvious move to keep him in the pen.
  6. I'm not going to lose too much sleep over this news. AA had a great year, but his overall body of work was just ok. I just hope the new guy doesn't stand pat and evaluate the team for a year before making a move because the team requires immediate tweaking.
  7. Eno Sarris wrote an article about it on fangraphs a while ago, he concluded that everything was the same except for his splitter which was being thrown for strikes more consistently, and thus inducing less whiffs and generating more contact.
  8. Is that how much money you would offer Iwakuma, or what you expect him to command on the open market?
  9. I would retain Saunders and utilize him as the 4th OF until Pompey forced my hand. I wouldn't rule out utilizing Saunders in a 1B platoon with Colabello either.
  10. I know it's an unpopular choice, but J.A. Happ is another interesting target. Since moving to Pittsburgh it seems like he has made a legitimate change to his arsenal by introducing more cutters and throwing less off speed pitches which resulted in some success, albeit over a SSS. The bonus is that Happ likely won't command very much money or term because of his limited sample of success.
  11. You definitely start with two years and a lower salary, but I doubt that gets it done on the open market.
  12. Iwakuma has been worth upwards of 3 WAR/200 IP the last three seasons, and Steamers projects him to be worth 3.5 WAR in 2016. The age is a bit of a concern, but I figure that the value Iwakuma can reasonably be expected to provide in the first two years of the deal will offset any decline in year three.
  13. I'm with BTS, the added depth is a good thing over a 162 game season. I'd also like to believe that the budget will increase enough that 6.5M isn't the difference between adding an impact arm and standing pat.
  14. If I were the Jays I'd throw 3 years/60M at Iwakuma with a club option for the 4th year. I'd also see if Doug Fister could be enticed to sign a cheap one year deal to try and rebuild his value. Jordan Zimmerman is another guy who really interests me, but I'm unsure if Rogers will open up the purse strings enough to make a competitive offer. Marcus Stroman Hisashi Iwakuma Marco Estrada (QO) Drew Hutchison R.A. Dickey Doug Fister
  15. I was hoping you might say something closer to 3 years/45M. It seems unlikely that the Jays will allocate that much money on a position player with two glaring holes in the rotation.
  16. Only if they are preceded by bunts to move the runner from 1st into scoring position.
  17. What does Ben Zobrist project to earn? I am intrigued by the idea of adding him because of his positional versatility, on base skills, and age which will likely limit the term of his deal.
  18. I still can't get over the fact that Daniel Murphy had half as many home runs in 9 post season games as he did in 140 regular season games.
  19. When you put it that way it's hard to disagree that he isn't deserving of a big raise. What would you consider a reasonable extension for Estrada?
  20. That is a great explanation, thank you.
  21. I know this is a thread about Estrada, but would anyone have interest in J.A. Happ? It seems like he made a legitimate tweak to his game by throwing more cutters and less breaking balls which coincided with more strikes and a better K/BB ratio. Combine that with his poor first half, and relatively mediocre career up to the Pirates trade, and it seems reasonable to assume that he could be had on a shorter term deal to prove his worth.
  22. Would you mind elaborating on point number two? I'm not terribly familiar with DIPS, and why I should be using it as a baseline for what to expect from Estrada moving forward. Thank you in advance.
  23. This article suggests that Estrada's ability to generate soft contact and induce a BABIP in the lower third of the league is a legitimate skill, and thus FIP and xFIP are not accurate indicators of his future ERA. I also recall reading a post from nox in the past about SP with strong changeups outperforming their peripherals, so perhaps there is something to be said about that as well. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/marco-estrada-al-contact-manager-of-the-year/
  24. Did you try the international link?
