I think it's pretty easy to defend selecting Pompey and Urena over Romano and Bergen. You just have to believe that neither pitcher is an MLB-calibre arm, which the team pretty clearly believes.

The 40-man is currently at 39 players. Presumably they'll make at least a couple of additions via free agency. Obviously they made the determination that they have no interest in Romano and Bergen on the 40-man. We saw them use one of the spots those two would have taken up on Luciano, and we'll surely see the other taken by someone else in the near future. What's gained by adding two guys for a few weeks when you know you're going to be DFA'ing them?

But why would he assume that's what King was talking about, and then call King a liar because he said there was an uptick in fastball velo? And even that table shows a 2-3 mph spike in velo in 2016 relative to the previous two years. It just seems like a completely absurd overreaction.

Am I taking crazy pills? Morton's velo by year: 2014 = 92.7 2015 = 92.9 2016 = 95.4 2017 = 96.0 2018 = 96.6 King said the velo ticked up in 2016 and was 100% correct.

Yeah, I don't understand why people think development will stall if he's on the MLB team. Spending a season throwing low-leverage innings against the best hitters in the world, will also being taught by MLB pitchers and the organization's best coaches isn't exactly catastrophic for development. And he at least has an off-speed pitch and control of an upper 90's fastball. It's not exactly a given that he'd get knocked around the park every time he pitches.

CJ Cron is a pretty similar player and was just-nontendered with a ~5M salary. Smoak at 8M won’t return much if anything. Nobody is paying for average 1B these days.

I don't understand the perception that the league seems to have about Morton's value. First Houston not offering a QO, then nobody being willing to exceed 2/30. Morton is really good, but nobody seems to want him.

Pillar and Stroman for India or Trammel doesn't even really seem that far-fetched.
