  1. Yup. If the team had money burning a hole in its pocket that major free agents just wouldn't take, Yu Darvish would have been a Blue Jay. If they had been consistently rebuffed by players who didn't want to come here, they would have jumped at the opportunity to throw all that money at a guy who was forced by the system to go to the highest bidder for his services. But they didn't sign Darvish for the same reason that they haven't signed any other top-tier FAs: they've had no interest in spending major money on a big-time player.
  2. Have there? I remember the jays being rebuffed by Ervin Santana and Gil Meche. Nothing else comes to mind.
  3. I don’t think we’ve actually tried to sign major free agents. We’ve been a big market team acting like a mid- (and often small) market team, and I think to at least some extent blaming it on free agents considering Toronto to be MLB’s Siberia. With the luxury tax effectively acting like a hard cap for most teams, there’s an opportunity for a market like Toronto to get in on the top guys without competing against teams like the Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox etc... we just saw San Diego sign a guy who would have been swallowed up by NY or LA back when the tax had less teeth. I think the limiting factor here is that Toronto won’t offer a major FA 200M, much more so than major FAs not being willing to come to Toronto except for a massive overpayment.
  4. This is likely ********. Toronto is a world class city and there's no reason to believe that players wouldn't come here except in the case of a massive premium being paid. We haven't signed major free agents because we haven't tried to sign major free agents. It might not happen this offseason, coming off a 90-100 loss year, but there's no reason to think that a competitive Toronto team would be considered an undesirable destination by free agents.
  5. We were on a crazy long run without board drama, but this last week on BJMB has been a horror show.
  6. He thinks he knows details about Spanky's personal life. He's been told that if he posts them again he'll be permabanned. He's very upset about it.
  7. I can see Hurl’s decision to reverse your permaban is working out very well.
  8. I wouldn't complain if they gave that to Cole. Greinke got 6/206 four years ago. Cole is better and younger than Greinke.
  9. I've been waiting for comments like this from management for awhile now. Losing 90+ games while making absolutely no effort whatsoever to be respectable is fine for a season, but it can't happen again next year. I love Mark Shapiro.
  10. Yes, it is very common.
  11. A lot of the mega-contracts for legit aces have worked out well. Scherzer provided tons of surplus. Greinke was great for Arizona. Strasburg is 3 years into a 7-year deal and has provided 12.1 fWAR. Getting someone like Cole, who has zero red flags, either performance or health-wise, to be the head of the rotation, makes a lot of sense.
  12. roasted cashews and a banana
  13. Don't even bother following the draft, because most of those prospects are going to fail.
  14. PSA: When you apply for a job, someone else is probably going to get it.
  15. Did you guys know that when you buy a lottery ticket you're probably not going to win?
  16. The worst part about waiver claims are the posters who feel the need to point out that the player is probably going to suck. Like, dude is making less than a million dollars, had literally zero trade value, and made it past multiple teams on waivers. We f***ing know he’s almost certainly going to suck. It doesn’t need to be said. The only thing worth talking about in these moves are the skills that give the player a chance to maybe contribute, even though he probably won’t.
  17. Astros probably had a claim in on him. Use him in relief, scrap the sinker, and see what kind of velo he gets throwing an elevated 4-seamer in 1-inning appearances. He doesn't need much to be effective with that curveball.
  18. He had a few pitches classified as 4-seam fastball in 2016 and 2019, with a difference in average velocity of 5 mph. They're not looking at the pitch frequencies.
  19. He doesn't throw a 4-seamer. You're comparing a small handful of pitches in 2016 to a small handful of pitches in 2019. His sinker is about where it was last year, and 2mph less than where he was in his breakout 2017. This is a good claim. Three years of team control after this season, and he's been a league average starter as recently as 2017 and 2018. Dude has an absolute wipeout curveball when he's on, and that could make him a weapon out of the pen even if he doesn't find it again as a starter.
  20. Well, he's a pending FA who's represented by Scott Boras and about to sign a $200M contract, so I don't think it's really outrageous to suggest he might be available.
  21. Nelson Cruz is on an insane heater: 13 homers in his last 15 games. 168 wRC+ on the season.
  22. I don't know about this narrative. Domingo Santana is a ~110 wRC+ DH masquerading as an OF, Tyler White is Rowdy Tellez. We'll see what kind of player Davis ends up being. Villar has put together a nice few years, but I wouldn't say anyone but him from this group has excelled since leaving the org.
  23. I want to hear about the Jays in heavy on Gerrit Cole. He might have no interest in coming here, and there’s no getting around that if it’s the case, but Toronto is absolutely the kind of market that should be willing to throw 200M at a legit ace. This is the best pitcher to hit the market since Scherzer.
  24. I think the philosophy overall is sound, but I wouldn't call it A+ at this point until they display that they're actually willing to pay star money to star players. We're not going to out-Rays the Rays, but we have the advantage of being able to throw some pretty serious cash around if we want to, and that should bridge the gap if the FO is mostly competent. I'm bothered by the fact that they apparently didn't even offer Stroman an extension. The Rays absolutely trade Stroman if they're in our shoes, but do they trade Stroman in our shoes if they have the resources to take payroll to $150M? There are valid reason for letting Stro go (empirical evidence that he's at high risk of ageing poorly, unreasonable contract demands etc...), but that decision could also have been influenced by reasons that would be concerning (Stro was mean to Atkins, Atkins has a Jimcanuck philosophy to team building and never really considered keeping the 28-year old on FA money).
  25. I wish he'd have more awareness of how insane this kind of comment will sound to the average fan. Their position player core next year is Gurriel, Biggio, Vlad, Bichette, and Jansen. That's 5 guys who are likely to be good players. They're also tied to Grichuk, and have an option on Galvis, but talking like he shouldn't be actively looking to add bats is completely tone deaf. It's the same story with the pitching. The staff right now is one elite reliever (Giles), a few back end starters (Thornton, Shoemaker's corpse, Borucki if his arm is still attached to his body come April), and bunch of trash. That's not a pretty good start, it's a complete tire fire. He's like the fantasy baseball owner who brags about his roster every spring and always misses the playoffs. You'd think he would have learned last August when he was gushing about how it would be really hard to upgrade the 25-man roster.
