We're in year 7 of DDL and 4 of BORED. Mike Trout teams are going to be a combined 11/11 in playoff appearances. He's basically an automatic playoff ticket in 20-team dynasties. With no salaries, he's just absurdly valuable.

A bit surprised that they pulled the trigger on Phelps this season. I thought they'd pick up his 2020 option and hope he'd build value with a healthy season. This is fine though. Hatch looks like a decent depth arm.

Dorion is a moron, but credit where it's due: Spending $42M in real money with a cap hit of $60+M is actually impressive. I don't believe any other team has reached such lofty heights of frugality. He's a terrible GM, but an idiot savant when it comes to saving Eugene Melnyk money.

Garry Bettman is going to have to step in at some point. Everyone thought it was his influence that lead to Melnyk announcing that they'd hire a President of Hockey Operations back in spring, but we're now into August and nobody has been hired, so that whole charade went nowhere.

With today's trade the actual expected payroll expenditures for the Ottawa Senators this year is about $42M. The cap floor is $60M. This is unprecedented cheapness. Literally every move they've made this offseason has been about money.

Holy f***, Stroman asking his boss' boss to leave the room during a meeting. Mark Shapiro seems to have pretty pendulous balls, and I have no idea how he lets a beta of this magnitude run his baseball team. I also don't really believe that Stroman was ever made a reasonable contract offer.

I think it's more pathetic to care about why people aren't fond of a player on a baseball team they watch for fun in their spare time. Why is it pathetic to just not like the guy's personality and be happy that you won't be exposed to it aynmore?

After taking time to think about it, I still don’t like the deal. There’s just so much time for an 18-year old A-ball pitcher to go off the rails. I think the reasons for (apparently) committing to a trade and not exploring an extension also matter here. Obviously we don’t know and will probably never find out, but if this was a case of Stro wanting crazy money and the team’s hand being forced then it makes more sense. But I think this is a healthier org with a reasonably extended Stro than with the two prospects we got in return.

It’s not Shapiro’s job to know who these prospects are or to be involved in trade discussions. It is his job to make sure his GM is competent though.
