I don't think they should retain him. He's a league-average player who gets all his value from his bat, and players like that get overpaid. He'll probably command something like 3/40 on the market, and you should be able to add 2 wins for cheaper than that. Someone like Nori Aoki probably signs for 3/20, will give you the same number of wins, and you keep the comp pick when Melky rejects arb.

They really can't afford to have any of Reyes/Bautista/Edwin decline. Reyes for the reasons you state, and the other two because they carry the offense on their backs and replacing bats like that is really expensive when nobody in the system projects as an impact position player. Problem is, the group is now well into their 30s, and it's only a matter of time at this point.

I guess the question is where they go from here. Bautista is 34 next year. Edwin 32. Reyes 32. Lind 31. Dickey 40. Buehrle 36. Outside of Stroman, Hutchison, and Lawrie, the players that will be expected to contribute are really old. Not only is there no reason to expect the injuries to happen with less frequency, but some of there guys are going to start declining hard from what they currently are.

Had the just signed Benoit and kept Fister they'd be like three wins better and in first place. That clusterf*** could very well cost them the season.
