I'd rather go that route than devote a significant portion of the team's resources to a free agent reliever. A lot of those guys are going to be replacement-level though. I think there is value in getting a guy you can reasonably expect to give you a win or better.

Ah. I think there is some merit to the idea of rotating guys through the DH spot and trading Lind. BUT, you still have to replace the 1-2 wins that Lind provides. If you're trading Lind for, say, Tony Watson and then using the $6 million savings on Chase Headley, the team is a lot better.

Sure, in a world where payroll can go to $190 million Robertson would be awesome. Is that the discussion we're having? I think the assumption of a $140 ceiling is a lot more interesting/realistic, and Robertson really doesn't make any sense in that situation.

Mayberry is a replacement-level hack who probably isn't even average offensively. Lind is comfortably above average as a hitter. You lose 1-2 wins in that exchange.

You're saying this to be contrarian, but it's a very bad idea.

Because, presumably, there is a finite amount of money available to be spent, and trading for a pre-arb reliever is a lot more preferable to paying sticker price on a similarly skilled free agent.

It kind of seems like a a down year around age-28-32 more often than not gets followed up by a bounce-back season when it's preceded by a lengthy track record of success. Take pretty much any great hitter and you can identify a season where someone would have sold low and missed out on like 5 more years of great production.

You might not even need to miss the playoffs if you're wise. Even this offseason you can nab an elite prospect for Ortiz, who you don't really even need.

Yeah. I learned that lesson the hard way this season when I penciled Gyorko and Bogaerts in for starting spots. Youth is nice, but it also comes with a higher likelihood of attrition, and trying to replace multiple bats midseason when 2-3 first or second year starters stumble a bit is pretty hard. I'm a lot more open to rostering 30+ year olds than I was two years ago.
