Could get crazy for the same reason everyone here kind of wants him even though nobody seems to love the idea: he’s the only FA hitter left who seems to offer the potential for 4-5 win season. It’s a bidding war waiting to happen.
Still not sure why we'd think the change in approach would cause him to outperform his xwOBA by 40 points. He didn't change in the direction of players who usually beat x stats (become more of a dead pull fly ball power hitter).
Some smart team is going to sign Hunter Renfroe or Adam Duvall for like 1/8 and get a 2-3 win season. Some other team is going to sign Cody Bellinger for like 8/200 and get a 2-3 win season.
There's also no reason why we can't be the team to give Austin Meadows a chance to rebound.
Getting backed into a corner and forced to gamble 200M on a player with major red flags because he's all that's available is exactly what you don't want to do.
Not that MLB or the PA will care, but overly complex contracts and luxury taxes might be bad for fan engagement. A big part of NHL fan discourse is discussion about the cap, with cap hits readily available and mostly easy to calculate.
I thought players got taxed in the state in which they earned their pay. I'm sure I've read about NHL players paying tax in many different states based on games played.
Seems wild that Ohtani would be able to earn 700M in Cali, then piss off to Japan and collect 680M of it without a dime going to California.
- Manoah for Ha-Seong Kim or Jorge Polanco
- Sign JD Martinez for 2/40
- Blow their load on Yamamoto for like 10/270 or whatever if they think he's an ace
- Bring Gurriel back for like 3/50
C - Kirk
1B - Vlad
2B - Kim or Polanco
3B - Schneider
SS - Bo
CF - Varsho
LF - Gurriel
RF - Springer
DH - Martinez
Jansen/Horwitz/Biggio/Lukes on the bench
Gausman
Yamamoto
Berrios
Bassitt
Kikuchi
Playoffs will be easy to make
I have all four about as valuable as hitter Ohtani in the short term, especially given that the two lesser hitters have CF eligibility. So it’s a question of whether I value pitcher Ohtani more than the 4-6 year age gap. After two TJS I’ll just take the younger elite hitter.
I wonder how soon the Royals trade Bobby Witt Jr. He's a FA after 2027, their team isn't winning anything between now and then, and they're probably not giving him the 400M it will take to keep him. Maybe they trade him with 2+ years left like the Nats did with Soto.
If the team has the willingness to spend 300-500 on a single player, that puts them in the market for mid-prime HoF level talent. The Harper/Betts/Judge tier of player. I hope they don’t get tunnel vision with Bo and Vlad. They can pick their spot here. Maybe it’s Soto next off-season. Or Sasaki when he’s posted. Or the Padres decide they can’t afford Tatis. Or Yordan Alvarez is the next Astro to hit the market. No need to hitch their wagon to someone like Vlad if they’re playing in the big boy pool.
I don't know why he sucks. Maybe injuries sapped his skills? League average hitter, and a butcher at 2B. Not really sure what problem he solves for Toronto.
Seems like the best fit of all the Reds infielders. They won't move McLain, EDLC, or probably CES. India sucks. I guess Steer is also a decent target, but I don't think I'd move Tiedemann for him.
