  1. Money saved goes into the 6M raise Reyes gets next year, among others.
  2. The game didn't mean anything to us, but we were playing a team very much in the wild card race (they would have been 2 back if they had won). We owe it to the other teams to do everything possible to try to win that game.
  3. I don't know what terms he left on. I really think they're going to go after pitching though, and 1 year of Buehrle might be a lot more attractive to them than a major long term deal.
  4. Yeah, Van Slyke along with Guerrero would be ideal for Buehrle and Navarro. I just don't think the dodgers would eat that much additional money.
  5. Yeah, they'd certainly have to bring in the right guys or it would definitely be a bad decision. Martin would be a great start. Maybe one of the Cubans would be a second. As long as they didn't invest it in the pen. You'd have to think the Dodgers could have interest in both Buehrle and Navarro. Not sure I'd want to eat the contracts of someone like Ethier though, which they'd probably insist on.
  6. I just don't see the Jays trading him, even if it makes a certain amount of sense to do so given financial constraints. I agree though, it's fun to watch him when he gets locked in. I also think it's incredibly valuable having him around the young pitchers in terms of showing the importance of changing speeds, working fast, and hitting your spots.
  7. Yeah, it was a good idea. Just hit it a tiny bit too hard.
  8. Yeah, this game is absolutely flying. Congrats to Buehrle. That's one hell of an impressive streak.
  9. Jays catchers were 14th in WAR. We can talk about framing, but the data currently isn't refined enough (imo) to be useful for direct comparison between players or teams. I would peg its current usefulness at saying one catcher is likely above average or another is below average, but not as a ranking system or in terms of adding or deducting WAR. I would prefer to pick up Martin obviously, or several other guys, but I'm much more worried about LF and 2nd base.
  10. All vets lose, all rookies gain! (for disclosure, I haven't run the numbers on that, so I can't back that up)
  11. You would have to attack it using predictive modelling. It might actually be possible the more I think about it, but that would be one hell of a nasty project to sort out.
  12. Maybe you and Goldbull are outliers. We should throw out those two results, and award me the best draft
  13. I don't think most of them get American citizenship, but citizenships from other countries. It's the work permits that could be more of a problem, but sports teams don't seem to have issues with that.
  14. You should trade him to me as damaged goods. Problem solved!
  15. Looks like Drouin is out for the next 4 weeks.
  16. I think in general you're correct. I don't see how you could account for enough to get meaningful results regarding game calling. The catcherFX data COULD be useful in evaluating framing though, as it might help show whether the pitcher should share credit for the framing results or not (regarding how well they repeatedly hit their target). The other major factors should be relatively easy to account for (umpire familiarity with the pitcher, pitcher stuff, pitcher reputation via previous success and control).
  17. The lack of a quality bench was one of the biggest issues. We just didn't have the ability to deal with injuries properly, or to deal with the necessary platoons. Fortunately having Mayberry and Valencia could go a long way towards helping that next year. Even more so if Izzy returns and is in superutil role. The pen was unfortunate, but it also wasn't something we really could have addressed differently. The lack of depth was.
  18. That was a fantastic at-bat by Pompey. I still want us to resign Melky, but Pompey in CF and Gose as the 4th outfielder would be just fine with me.
  19. Whenever Yahoo lists him on the IR. Who knows when that will be (probably sometime before the rosters are cut down irl).
  20. I would really hate to face the Oakland / Detroit pitching staffs in the playoffs. Maybe you manage to eek out some wins, but your offense is probably in a slump the rest of the playoffs regardless.
