The money is part of it, but Flaherty in 2023 also posted a 4.99 ERA and 4.36 xFIP and in a 2022 (limited starts) put up a 4.25 ERA and 4.93 xFIP with walk problems both years and has had a lot of injury issues beyond that. Both players project pretty similarly but Scherzer has a much better health record and has much better, or at least consistent, command. I have more faith in Scherzer meeting his projections than I do in Flaherty, but Flaherty probably has a higher ceiling. I would have been happy to get either of them though.
