Its the fact he CHOSE to save Hoffman for the 9th when he was literally pulled from the role because he couldnt be trusted. Rogers and Varland hardly threw any pitches and you burned them for the biggest stain on this franchise for the past 1.5 season.
vanland Verified Member Posted May 30 Posted May 30 Factoid: only 3 teams have ever walked 11 batters and gone on to win the game. White Sox July 28, 1976 Tigers Oct 12 1984 Rockies may 12, 1995; June 5 1999 and; last year against the Friars the more you know🌈 Jays24 1
Rustanger Verified Member Posted May 30 Posted May 30 No lead is safe with Hoffman. He should have pitched the 7th and then you at least have Roger's or Varland to bail him out. Pathetic. Yes, Varland faced the best Orioles hitters, but what does it matter if Hoffman can't get the other Orioles hitters out. Overthinking by JS. Jays24 1
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted May 30 Posted May 30 13 minutes ago, Jays24 said: The problem is our idiot manager puts Hoffman on the same level as Rogers and Varland thinking all 3 are interchangeable. You keep guys like Rogers/Varland to put out fires from scrubs like Hoffman. Hoffman 100% needed to pitch the 7th when it was 8/9/1. Or even the 8th inning because you had a 3 run lead so you can bring in Varland if he chokes. Keeping Hoffman gives you no other outs and there was a reason he was pulled as a closer. 0 excuse for continuing this stupid blind trust in a player who has not earned it. If I recall correctly the game was much closer in the 7th inning when Rogers entered and if Hoffman came in at that time featuring the lack of stuff and command he featured them he likely would have allowed the Orioles to take the lead at that point. There's just no easy solution here as the team plays a ton of close games, only has 3 healthy starters and is missing bullpen pieces as well. My only real complaint was that Hoffman was left in for several hitters too many which left an impossible situation for Seabold. Stangstag 1

For some reason, Hoffman cannot pitch in the 9th the way he pitches in the 7th/8th. I don't but this in the slightest. Hoffman came into the game with a combination of crappy stuff and no command and it likely wouldn't have mattered what inning he pitched in.
Landry_25 Verified Member Posted May 30 Posted May 30 Using him in 7 wasn’t realistic either with 2-1 lead. 8th yes 4-1 then garland could bail him out at least when he’s utter s***. But this was just dumb. Should have been able to handle 5-1 lead though and should have definitely been pulled before totally f***ing the game up

Im sure youre smart enough to realize if you bring Hoffman on earlier then you have Varland/Rogers behind him to help clean up the mess. You burn those 2 then youre left with what we saw today. Absolute joke how he managed the pen and there's no sugarcoating it so please read the room and stop lol.

You are missing the important part where I said the Orioles had 8/9/1 coming up. This also leaves you with 2 elite relievers in Rogers and Varland to clean up his mess immediately. Not sure why youre choosing to die on this hill but kudos on being part of the 1% who thought Schneider handled the pen pretty well minus the very end lol.
JaysFan99 Verified Member Posted May 31 Posted May 31 Any chance Tiedemann comes back and turns into something out of the bullpen later this year? I think we need to cut ties with both Little and Hoffman. Neither can mentally pitch here anymore. I don’t think fans will ever get over last year.

Not sure why youre choosing to die on this hill but kudos on being part of the 1% who thought Schneider handled the pen pretty well minus the very end lol. I'm not an angry simpleton who thinks that this was an easy situation and believe no matter where you inserted Hoffman he easily could have blown the game. If Hoffman came in during the 7th with how much rope Schneider gave him the team would likely be losing before he was replaced. They had a precarious 1 run lead at that point, and with how quickly things unraveled for Hoffman there's nearly no chance that the Blue Jays would have still been leading by the time he was replaced even if the manager had a much quicker hook. Hoffman was given the easiest job of any of the relievers that came into the game as he was facing the bottom of the lineup with a 4 run lead. It's hindsight criticism to suggest that it's Schneider's fault that Hoffman picked a really bad time to experience a meltdown. Hoffman had pitched to a 1.64 FIP in the month of May and was looking the best he had as a Blue Jay since the month of April a season ago.
jmomcc Verified Member Posted May 31 Posted May 31 They factually used him in the lowest leverage spot. Rogers came in when it was still 2-1 and Varland had the best hitters. Hoffman had a 4 run lead against the back of the order. He should be able to do that . Schneider however needs to recognize that hoffman might be a little weak mentally and pull him earlier. But at the end of the day this is on hoffman. I'd schedule a loss tomorrow. Give this bullpen a two day break. They need to get the sheer number of relief outings down somehow or they are going to burn out in july and our season will be done. In the big scheme of things a split here is fine. Tele Player Verified Member Posted May 31 Posted May 31 The only relieving Hoffman should be doing is at the concessions on Loonie Dog night when it gets too busy. Even then, only use him early on.
