Maybe just let them tie it or we’re down by 1? Why does he have to just completely suck ass and put the other team ahead multiple runs? You dont compile a 4.77ERA by limiting damage. When he sucks, he sucks. Its why I mentioned very early in the year that we need to have another pitcher warming up as soon as he comes on. If I can tell when Hoffman is trash then the guys paid millions should be able to pick up on that. Typically pitchers like this arent your closers but we dont have a better option so it is what it is. I was hoping we could find a better than him at the deadline.

Someone should be warming up every time he gets into a game. Can you name one ML manager who you've seen immediately start warming up a bullpen arm every time he brings his closer into the game? Jays are 455-386 (.541) since 2020 - the best stretch we've had in 30 years and even the slightly more intelligent Jays fans can't go a month or 2 without suggesting the FO and Manager are complete garbage that should be fired immediately. Every single move and decision is criticized like fans have never followed a baseball team in their lives - with fans acting like they are 1000% smarter than everyone in the organization. This is a prime example of how stupid our society is and why we have so many issues within it. Governator, jaysblue, Omar and 2 others 5

I know he will be back up but he should never have been down in the first place. It was for several days, they weren't going to option a player they just acquired or our best LHP from the pen... this is a nothing burger man. Brownie19 1

When our closer can stop being the runaway leader of such a category then im willing to give him the benefit. Relievers like Hoffman arent meant to be closers because what im outlining is what you do for a normal reliever that you can pull immediately after facing 3 batters if they dont have "it". This team should have been rolling with the "closing by committe" idea because no one's good enough to be THAT guy in our pen. Spanky__99 1
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2025 Posted August 27, 2025 So you can't name one manager in ML history who's implemented what you're suggesting. Got it. What a breakthrough idea you've presented. MLB teams should be lining up to hire a brilliant mind like yours. Could they try someone else at closer to see how it goes? Sure - but just say that. Try this "Hoffman's struggling as of late, perhaps we should try someone else in that role for a few weeks to let Hoffman get his head/mechanics straight. If he ends up getting Wally Pipped by this replacement, then so be it. Maybe that end up working out better for the team"
BB17 Verified Member Posted August 27, 2025 Posted August 27, 2025 Hoffman issue is probably just overworked. Its pretty simple, if his stuff isn't there that night he just gets smashed. Even when hes going "great" he makes plenty of mistakes in the middle of the zone its just at 97-98 he can get it by guys. Look at the homers last might right down the middle.. His command completely goes away too. Little and Yariel's FB velo also have been trending down this month. It is the dog days of August so guys are probably just hitting a wall.
