Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2024 Author Posted April 9, 2024 DS starting in LF against a RHP for the second night in a row. Is JS feeling ok? I'd like to see Clement in there for Biggio but otherwise I have no complaints.
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 The fun thing about tonight is that George Kirby and Chris Bassitt have the same mechanics And exactly the same body And they are both deep arsenal guys who can throw anything Bassitt is just the earth 2099 version of George Kirby. He lost his 4 seamer mid-career and became an old two-seamer. That's the difference.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 I'd like to see Clement in there for Biggio but otherwise I have no complaints. I think I'm fine with Biggio in there for now. It's really IKF who should be playing less in favor of Clement, as I don't think there is a huge gap there defensively, and offensively Clement might be able to BABIP his way to decent numbers while IKF is what he is. Either way, DS absolutely should be starting everyday, so I'll take that tiny consolation for now.

IKF and Biggio are tied for 2nd on the team in WAR man But honestly, I think Biggio's looked great to start the year. My gut says Clement plays over IKF.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2024 Author Posted April 9, 2024 I’ve seen plenty of Biggio over the years and I can’t say I’ve been impressed. He’s basically replacement level 3 years running. Havent seen a ton of Kinder Falafel but his defense seems to be as good as advertised and his ABs have been fine as well. Doesn’t seem to have much power but he sprays the ball around. Seems like a good base runner as well and 20+ steals is in reach with enough PT. If he gets regular run at 3B I think he’ll put up the WAR. But hey, they fit naturally in a platoon and almost everyone agrees they are toward the bottom of the roster so it’s kind of splitting hairs.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2024 Author Posted April 9, 2024 Varsho batting 9th the day after sitting is an ominous sign for him. Fans will bat a guy 9th on a whim but for the actual team to do it after batting him in the middle of the lineup for a week and then sitting him doesn’t make me confident about his chances to turn things around.
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 tbh I do not think Biggio has been having good plate appearances he has not been walking a lot or putting good swings on the ball or making good swing decisions. He has taken strikes down the dick way too often. If you remove his good game #1 where he walked twice and homered, he is hitting .231/.310/.308 with just a 6.9% walk rate his only barrel so far was that home run which barely got out BIG MEH STRONGLY PREFER ERNEST "ROBERTO" CLEMENT(e)

Only way it's not ominous is if the team sees it as a mental health break

From 4 hole to start '23 to sitting vs a RHP in the home opener to hitting 9th vs a RHP the next night. Trying to take any pressure off him to try to get him going likely. He nowhere near as bad as he has started. Just let Jano go for '25 and make him a C already. I guess he could go to CF next yr which I thought was the plan for this year. Although the aged KK looked pretty mighty still out there last night.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 Babe back in there! He should be at this point. Varsho and KK are providing nothing with the bat

Pretty quick turn from him batting 5th/4th down to 8th/9th now… Maybe the team thinks his struggles are pressure-related? Or maybe they think he’s flat out cooked which would be depressing

HomeRunHomer Verified Member Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 Lineup seems alright. Biggio has played good so far this year. Don't mind him getting at bats against righties. And if you are going to play Varsho, batting him 9th and in centerfield seems fine. Him and KK are nearly the same player. All defense with little to no offense, while Varsho bats for more power and KK bats for a higher average.

I mean, OK, but he seemed to hit that double down the line and the pinch hit RBI single in the comeback effort v. the Yankees both hard. You also can't just remove 1 whole game!
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2024 Author Posted April 9, 2024 I assume a barrel requires an exit velo > 100 MPH? I mean, OK, but he seemed to hit that double down the line and the pinch hit RBI single in the comeback effort v. the Yankees both hard. You also can't just remove 1 whole game! You are close! It's 98 mph with a launch angle of 26 to 30 degrees. The harder you hit the ball, the larger the launch angle range becomes. To be Barreled, a batted ball requires an exit velocity of at least 98 mph. At that speed, balls struck with a launch angle between 26-30 degrees always garner Barreled classification. For every mph over 98, the range of launch angles expands. For example: A ball traveling 99 mph always earns 'Barreled' status when struck between 25-31 degrees. Add one more mph -- to reach 100 -- and the range grows another three degrees, to 24-33. Every additional mph over 100 increases the range another two to three degrees until an exit velocity of 116 mph is reached. At that threshold, the Barreled designation is assigned to any ball with a launch angle between eight and 50 degrees. https://www.mlb.com/glossary/statcast/barrel#
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 I won't be sucked into giving Biggio the benefit of the doubt given the plethora of opportunities this org has given him. We ALL know his uses and they are few. I hope he plays good defense and gets on base with a league average bat. Beyond that, we've seen this movie before; let's not pretend it will get better with repeat viewings.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 I'm guessing Manoah, Jano, Romano and Swanson rehab stints are imminent in Buffalo, as they are all with the club.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 Lot of pitches across the heart of the plate.
