This is not good for the Jays

Yeah people probably realized the upside there. Could probably double their investment in less than 5 years you’d think, considering what’s there to work with

All be can hope for is some kind of unwise spending spree, like a mini Cohen season, that ends in disaster and sets them back a bit

Go sign Bellinger for $200M to impress the new owner!

Matt Chapman for $160M would be a good fit!

That would’ve even do it. They’d need to trade some of the controllable stars for vets that didn’t work out. Don’t think even Cohen would go there.

I’m sure the deal won’t be finalized for many months, so at least it’s over starting next year.

My hope is the Orioles just turn into the MLB version of the OKC Thunder. Elite farm system do stockpiling draft assets but never succeed at anything because they won't part with any of it.

OKC is not a finished product. It’s a bad comp. It’s not like a Buffalo Bills team that looked like it was on the rise but plateaued (even fell back a little) and stayed there.

It's really not. Sam Presti is notorious for his unwillingness to unload draft capital and never winning anything. He's been doing it a long time.

He also fumbled a dynasty by getting peanuts for James Harden. Which is regarded as one of the worst trades in NBA History.

Ah historically. I was just thinking this squad by next year if Chet takes a step forward could be something. The conference is weak enough where they could come out this year too, but doubt it

f***ing hell... like many have already said, this is horrible news for us. Baltimore is probably in the best position in baseball or top 3 at least for sustained winning. Now they've taken care of the only thing that was in their way. Get ready for a dynasty folks.

We should probably see what the new owners are like before running around in a panic. Private equity groups may very well prioritize profit over on-field performance. It's hard to see they being worse than the disfunction the Orioles had though.

Top 3?

Going forward, if Baltimore gets the resources that the Braves get then hell ya, they can be the next Houston Astros. No one will ever be the Dodgers in terms of resources.

My point was that the Orioles already have a great young team in the majors with a very good farm system still. They have just needed some spending on vets to certify their World Series chances. Like I said, thank God the schedules have been balanced lol.

Private equity firms would build the brand and increase the value. It’s well known sports teams offer small returns. You don’t pay $1.7b to make $50m on the bottom line at the end of the year. Baltimore prob doesn’t even clear that.

Baltimore is about to become the Astros

Baltimore is already ahead of where the Astros were. Samuel Basallo is basically Yordan Alvarez and no one is talking about him.

It's over. The Toronto Blue Jays as a functional franchise has ended. The Orioles are now a better version of the Astros owned by a billionaire. 100 win seasons for the next 20 years.

I'm being a bit dramatic. No I am not.

The greatest prospect in Blue Jays history was Vladimir Guerrero Jr. who was talked about as a legend from day 1.

As an 18 year old Samuel Basallo was ahead of Guerrero and Juan Soto at 18. And no one is talking about him because he is like the 5th best prospect they've developed in the last 2 years.

Congratulations to the Baltimore Orioles for creating the greatest franchise ever. Congratulations to David Rubstein for buying the best group of talent ever.

The Toronto Blue will win 78 games with 90 win talent because of the division.

I think the lowest profits in 2022 was Cleveland at 38 million. Currently the team is valuated at 1.3 billion. Now, DickPole could probably explain this far better than I could, and 3% (38 million out of 1.3 billion) doesn't look like a lot for annual returns on it's own, but when these teams are raking in tens of millions in ancillary income that doesn't get reported on the MLB team's books, that 3% turns to much higher % very quickly.

And Baltimore in 2022? Baltimore had the highest profit margin of any team in 2022. Revenues 262 million, EBITDA of 65 million for a margin of 25%. 1.7 billion valuation.

Other teams had higher EBITDA in terms of actual dollars of course, like say... Boston at 72 million, but with their much higher revenue of over 500 million, their margin was only 14% with a much much higher valuation.

Don't let these small market teams fool you. They're making tens of millions every year on baseball and other streams related to baseball and can absolutely afford to spend more on their product, they just choose not to.

Basallo is MLB's 17th ranked prospect in baseball. People are talking about him. You're going to need a new schtick.

Nobody was talking about him 6 months ago. Obviously on the radar now. If he starts hot he is likely headed for the 1 spot as soon as early next year. This will be their 4th 1st overall prospect in a row.

He was 42nd mid season Olerud, c'mon bro.

Last year he put up decent numbers in A ball and ridiculous numbers over a 27 game stretch in high A. That's a pretty small sample size so I'm not ready to anoint him yet Soto didn't even get as high as Basallo in the prospect lists and jumped from A ball to the majors in one year. Vlad was consistently rated highly but much of that was based on his advanced eye at the plate where he was taking more walks than strikeouts (hopefully he goes back to that approach) combined with crazy swing speed and bat to ball skills.

I'm not saying Basallo won't get there but I need to see more. I've seen lots of guys go off for 27 games and come back down.

You know how it is, if someone hasn't heard of prospect X that must mean nobody else has either.

Unusual contract

This seems completely unnecessary

I feel the reasoning behind it on both sides is clear. I’m sorry that’s not how you would do things. One would’ve called ChadG’s original deal strange.

I think most did find Green's contract to be odd and/or complicated. Why is this good for SD? If Peralta is good - he's going to opt out and leave. If he sucks, then SD is stuck with him (for up to 4 years). How is a pitcher coming off a s***** -0.5 WAR season getting a 4 year deal? I expected him to get a spring training invite to be honest. I thought SD was trying to cut payroll. Their new strategy seems to be signing lots of RP'ers.
