If the Padres wanted a better haul they should have moved Soto at the deadline last year. Weren't they pretty much out of it by then??

No. Wheels came off after the Deadline. They had a punchers chance if I remember right

Supply and demand, bro. It’ll depend if they want to water down the return to shed payroll.

Any team making the move will be aware they are likely losing on future WAR across all players in the deal.

Someone like Soto isn’t available often and is a “playoff roster game changer”

Someone will pay close to what SD wants

If the Padres financial situation is as dire as reported they aren't exactly in the driver's seat when it comes to the eventual Soto return. They have to fill out most of their rotation and simultaneously make a sizable cut to their player salary budget. Most of their long term contracts are basically unmovable given as well so the only tangible asset they have to move for real cost savings is Soto.

Yeah I looked - they had a 30% chance and a talented team. I can understand not selling. At the same time they didn't add either. And still finished within spitting distance of the WS bound DBacks.

Yeah, the owner had built the team to win. Didn’t make sense to sell or add. He stood pat to see what would happen, also knowing his tv deal collapsed. I’ve said before I was in San Diego for a bit many years ago, when it was such a s***/forgettable org, so I can definitely admire what that owner did, even if the nerds can’t

I don’t think it’s going to take a ton of prospects. The reports of SD asking for 6 players is just insane

Pretty much the only guy I would hate if they moved is Ricky T. Orelvis and Arjun would sting.

Manoah

Pearson

Barriera

Who says no?

I think the Padres would get more than that, at least a position player prospect in there. Depends how they would value Manoah and Pearson though. I would think the Yankees would offer more than that.

What assets do the Yankees have? I looked up Thorpe and he's ok. Seems like the Padres prefer Manoah

s***** MLB level prospects or young players:

Austin Wells, Everson Periera, Estavan Florial, Oswald Peraza, Oswaldo Cabrera.

I doubt any of those bats profile as first division starters, but some team might value them while they are cheap.

King and Schmidt.

Several controllable RP with value.

Trey Sweeney, Roderick Arias, Spencer Jones.

Handful of prospect arms like Thorpe, Gil, Yoendrys Gomez, Will Warren.

Report: Cubs’ Optimism On Landing Ohtani “Has Waned”

By Steve Adams | December 5, 2023 at 12:15pm CDT

Shohei Ohtani’s camp at CAA has done a good job keeping his free agency a relatively silent endeavor, but there have been occasional indicators that his market is beginning to narrow. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported last week that the Red Sox, Rangers and Mets had shifted their focus to players other than Ohtani, not believing themselves to be strong contenders to land him. Today, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports that the Cubs are in a similar position. Chicago’s “optimism of landing Ohtani has now significantly waned,” per Nightengale, citing a high-ranking team executive.

Known suitors for Ohtani generally include the Dodgers, Blue Jays, Angels and Giants. (Others have surely expressed interest throughout the offseason.) If the Cubs are indeed pessimistic and/or turning their attention elsewhere, that makes four teams in the past four days that are now said to be increasingly doubtful about their chances of landing the two-time AL MVP. Given the secretive nature of Ohtani’s market, it’s always possible there are additional, surprise suitors lurking, but to this point there’s little to no indication of the ever-popular “mystery team” joining the fray.

Dominguez and Volpe also exist although not sure Yankees would deal them.

Volpe projects as a 3-win player next year, for league min. I don't think that would be a reasonable ask for 1-year of Soto at 30M or whatever.

Him staying with the Angels would ruin the offseason

Hahaha... I've always said he might stay in LA, just which side of the city, never dreamed Toronto would be in the mix.

Him not coming here would suck. But I wouldn't mind LAD as a destination. Him and Trout toiling away with the Angels into their 30s is just too sad to actually happen

Thorpe was the minor league pitcher of the year. Great second half. He is good.

The 4 choices of LA, LA, SF, Toronto doesn’t seem promising. It’s a classic, 1st grade, what doesn’t belong question.

Agreed. The Angels being there is absurd.

If Ohtani stays with the Angels he deserves to lose and I wouldn't feel bad for him anymore. Talk about doing it to yourself...

I feel this.
