infinitebook Verified Member Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 Verlander won it last year with a 1.75 ERA. Gausman is almost double that. He doesn't need to beat 2022 Verlander, he just needs to be the best pitcher this year.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 Springer of old locked in the last 30 games or so. We need him. He's such a massive difference maker when he's hot and leading off every game

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 Imagine Springer and Vlad doing this all year

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2023 Posted September 10, 2023 Buck does this almost everyday. In general, the game has passed him by. I think there is some validity to starting pitchers "learning" to pitch through challenges - but that's also not a reasons to let you starter go 7 innings every night, regardless of the results. Just because it worked for pitchers like Greinke and Maddux doesn't mean it will work for everyone. Was just watching the game replay and holy f*** that rant can be summarized in about 4 words..."get off my lawn"

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2023 Posted September 10, 2023 There really isn't a clear front runner for the AL Cy Young, though Gausman does deserve it. According to fWAR, Gausman has been the best pitcher in the AL with a 5.2 WAR. Gray is second at 4.6 with Eflin (4.1) and Kirby (4.0). Cole and Framber at 3.9 WAR. If Gausman has a big September, pads up his win total and keeps his ERA in the low 3's/high 2's, I think he should be a lock. Cole is really the only competition given his 13-4 record which looks sexy to some voters and his sub 3 ERA at 2.90. Cole also has more innings 180 vs. 167 and will also have over 200K's. Hope Gausman gets it and he's more deserving than Cole IMO.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2023 Posted September 10, 2023 If Gausman wins the Cy Young this season, that's two Cy Young winners (Ray and Gausman) in three years. Huge props to Atkins on that. Don't think any GM has brought in two Cy Young arms like that over a short timespan!

A couple of losses and an ERA over 3 for Cole would help a lot.

Gotta hope he doesn't finish the season with a 17-4 record or something with an ERA below 3.
