jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 Whenever it's determined that he's healthy enough to pitch again, I would consider make him a second half/playoff pitcher. Hit exclusively in the first half as a DH, and multipurpose after the all-star break or maybe a bit sooner. Otherwise you can start him for all your home games and playoff games. That would give his arm sufficient rest throughout the season. I don't like the idea of making him a bullpen arm and don't even think making him a bullpen arm necessarily is healthier for him. Yeah agreed. Would make him a 15-20 start pitcher in the second half and who could pitch in the Postseason. Would keep him healthier and at least you get him pitching in more meaningful games in September and October. I don't think making him a bullpen arm is ideal. Sure it limits his innings but think he would be more valuable as a starter who makes 15-20 starts per season in the second half.

The trouble with making him a pen arm…if he’s already in the game as a DH or even a RF or 1B, how does he start to stretch and get loose before coming out to the mound for the normal time-constrained warm up pitches? He’d be nearly 100% limited to DH and have to go from the bench out to the bullpen to start warming up and hope he didn’t have to hit that inning.
Joltin Joe Verified Member Posted September 6, 2023 Posted September 6, 2023 Wonder if increase our chance to sign him
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2023 Posted September 6, 2023 Wonder if increase our chance to sign him Dodgers and Yankees IMO are still the heavy favourites. Other secondary teams with a small chance include the Mariners, Mets, Angels, Giants, Red Sox. I would throw the Jays maybe behind those teams. Maybe the Braves if AA wants to go all in haha.

Angels are a heavy favourite to resign him, how can the Yankees afford him, don't they have a ton of money tied up in payroll?

Jay, the Yankees don't care about their payroll. Money and the luxury tax aren't issues for their ownership. They'll spend anything. Given their disappointing season, the Yankees will make a huge splash whether it's Ohtani or someone else. Ohtani in a Yankees uniform would be huge. TV contracts, marketing, jersey sales, the hype in NYC. That bat with the short porch in RF. Pairing Ohtani with Judge in their lineup. Having Ohtani pitching with Cole as a 1-2 punch. Yankees definitely benefit a lot from him.

Yankees have endless money when needed, its just reality. I think the Mets would outbid them though. And I don’t think Ohtani will actually leave the West coast. It’ll be Dodgers or Seattle IMO

Meh bad contracts don't hurt the Yankees as they do other teams. They have an unlimited payroll. Adding Ohtani along with some other roster moves likely makes them one of the favourites in the AL East. In Ohtani, they address both their lineup and rotation. Just for fun what their rotation and lineup would look like with Ohtani: Rotation: Cole Ohtani Rodon Cortes German/Severino/Schmidt/Montas/King Lineup (in no particular order): LeMahieu Judge Ohtani Torres Stanton Rizzo Dominguez Volpe Catcher

Do you think the Yankees care? I know penalties are harsher now yes. If it means signing one of the best players of this century like Ohtani and winning a World Series, I don't think they would care.

Yankees definitely benefit a lot from him. Hal is not George. They definitely care about payroll. With that said, if they are sincere about the youth movement and are ready to use a bunch of $750k guys in starting spots (Volpe, Dominguez, Peraza, Wells, etc), then they might be willing to get in the Ohtani bidding. Hal cares about attendance, and Ohtani would definitely keep attendance up next season coming off a down year in 2023. Still say he goes to the Dodgers though.

Okay... losing 100's of millions a year and draft picks is fine, I guess.

Ohtani in NYC in a Yankees uniform likely brings in more and gives them a very good chance at a World Series. As a Jays fan, would prefer Ohtani stays on the west coast.
