Laika Community Moderator Posted August 23, 2023 Posted August 23, 2023 Yeah, and that’s after looking awful in April. He’s been a massive pickup. At one point I thought Belt might be like... 2-3 weeks from a DFA
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 23, 2023 Posted August 23, 2023 Belt has a .394 wOBA since May 1 Vlad has a .324 since then and -0.1 fWAR
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 23, 2023 Posted August 23, 2023 Given that Kirk is perhaps a big defensive upgrade on Jansen, and Jansen may be a more dangerous hitter than Vlad... The Jays best lineup right now might be Jansen DH, Kirk C, Belt 1B, Vlad on the pine. hhahhaa
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2023 Posted August 23, 2023 Mark DeRosa just did a great breakdown on Belt, very good watch. This guy controls the zone, man. Great swing decisions, so much to like as a hitter.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2023 Posted August 23, 2023 Vlad needs to be moved down the Order, huge win. Belt da man.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2023 Posted August 23, 2023 They are getting pitching back and just made a flurry of roster moves for some new energy/blood. They have Cole and Judge still and they will not be pushovers. Yeah agreed. I don't think people should assume facing the Yankees will be a walk in the park. They could turn things around by time the Jays roll into town like you said - calling up fresh blood, playing better baseball. Wouldn't want to face Cole and Rodon in a series. Jays should be able to win 2 of 3, but don't take those series for granted.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2023 Posted August 23, 2023 Blue Jays Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has grounded into a MLB-high 70 double plays since 2020.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2023 Posted August 23, 2023 No team in the MLB is a pushover in any short series, that's fool's Gold, lol.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 23, 2023 Posted August 23, 2023 The Brandon Belt home run was so f***ing satisfying, lol That + the Bo play + Romano beasting in the 10th Very very satisfying end to a game that Schneider tried his best to Yimi into the ground

I got up out of my seat after Bo made that throw! Huge play!
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2023 Posted August 23, 2023 Can’t believe we beat the Orioles last night. Still living off that high.

Since he stopped tipping his pitches towards the end of May he's been one of the team's best relievers with 1.93 ERA/2.84 FIP/0.7 FWAR over 28 innings. I really don't get the amount of grousing that occurs over a dude that's pitched like a 1.5 WAR reliever over nearly half a season of games, there's non-stop bitching every time he enters a game.

He’s fine, just isn’t one of the better guys in the pen now that we have some newer acquisitions. Without looking at the numbers, his main issue seems to be that he isn’t striking out many batters
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2023 Posted August 23, 2023 That felt like a playoff game. Not sure why Schneider decided to use the entire pen, but whatever.. they won!

Without looking at the numbers, his main issue seems to be that he isn’t striking out many batters I can agree that Garcia might be down the pecking order in the pen a bit after all of the additions this season but that doesn't take away from the fact that he's still a damn good reliever. Having a guy like this available in middle relief is a really strong asset. For the season as a whole Garcia is striking out 10.10 per nine innings. He is definitely striking out fewer batters recently though with only 6.75 k/9 in August.

I just think there’s better guys to go to with runners on base in that situation last night.

I just think there’s better guys to go to with runners on base in that situation last night. The team doesn't use Swanson in early innings so he's out as an option. That basically leaves Richards, Garcia and Cabrera as remaining options. Cabrera is used more specifically for matchups against lefty batters so that leaves Richards and Garcia. Runners on base: Garcia 9.24 k/9 2.13 BB/9 .389 BABIP 4.33 K/BB LOB 45.5% 3.19 FIP Richards 12.43 k/9 5.14 BB/9 BABIP .279 LOB 61% 2.98 FIP Richards get a slight nod here with more strikeouts and more runners left on base. Neither guy really stands out dramatically over the other based on having runners on base, but it's a far different situation when there are runners in scoring position. Runners in scoring position: Garcia: 9.42K/9 3.14BB/9 3.00K/BB 1.33 BABIP .333 LOB 10.2% 3.55 FIP Richards: 14.00K/9 9.00 BB/9 1.56 K/BB BABIP .250 LOB 35.7% 3.49FIP Richards get the nod here again with the great strikeout rate and much better strand rate. He seems a little more likely to compound the issues due to the high walk rate but FIP values are essentially the same.

I guess I just don’t really see why Swanson isn’t considered an option in earlier high leverage scenarios. But also seems Richards should be used over Garcia in those spots too. The LOB is a huge difference
