tossingthiscoin Verified Member Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 I think the Rangers got Jordan Montgomery without giving up more than we did for Hicks... Robbers seems a lot for a rental reliever.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 If 2 non roster guys are the return for Hicks, they’d still have to DFA someone right? Yes.
PhillyBlueJay Verified Member Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Just need to maybe aquire Tommy Pham or Lane Thomas to mash left handed pitchers the Jays will have to face next two months or Jordan Montgomery in the playoffs!
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Damn that's a really steep price. Definitely needed another leverage arm with Romano on the shelf right now so good on Atkins for pulling the trigger. Yeah. Plus the rotation is still okay for 2024. Gausman, Berrios, Bassitt, Kooch and Manoah + Tiedemann as the first layer of depth. I don’t like the trade in a vacuum but it’s not egregious.

Depends if Shatkins had prelims with his agent and feel confident in extending him. A bit steep but sometimes you have no choice. With the addition of Greene and when Romano is back, we'll have a pretty solid back end.

Yeah both of these guys likely max out as 5th starter/innings eater types, but each of them may have been legitimate depth options as soon as next season. Given how the team had all of the older depth options flame out this season hopefully the rotation depth will be more successfully addressed next offseason.

Best reliever on the market, it's always going to be a sellers market now. Good trade, twas needed.

I doubt it happens though, Hicks would be nuts not to test free agency.
PhillyBlueJay Verified Member Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 We’ve all seen the last 4-5 years that the teams with the deepest bullpens last in the race to wild card and tend to be the shut down teams in the playoffs! Atkins has to secure a top closer type pitcher and solidify the pen. Might be the best moves Atkins has done the last 5 years by picking up a hard throwing lefty on the waiver wire and trading for Hicks. Just need one solid slugging hitter to provide depth protection for Vlad and waiver wire Biggio.

A pen with Romano, Green, Swanson, Hicks, Mayza, Garcia and Richards as a starting point is pretty stout. There will be an interesting battle to see who fills out the remaining spot between Cabrera who has been really impressive in his small sample with the team, Pearson and Jackson. It appears as though there will be a tough decision on which guy is the odd man out when it's all said and done.
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Just how hard does Jordan Hicks throw? His four-seamer (101.0 mph) and sinker (100.5 mph) are two of the six fastest pitches in MLB this season. He's thrown 373 pitches at 100 mph or higher, the most in MLB this season. His peak in 2023? 104.3 mph.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 The Orioles Tyler Wells got lit up last night and has been sent down to the minors. Wells was one of their best SPs the first half. I think this is a sign that the Orioles will go hard after SPs even more so than we all suspected.

Cabrera stays by default because he's left handed, but has also looked really good regardless.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Great add with Hicks! Props to Atkins for adding a high K arm who can close games and pitch multiple innings if need be. Love the move!

The potential difference maker rotation options are already dwindling a bit with the Scherzer and Montgomery trades. It also sounds like the Cubs may go for it so that could also mean Stroman may not be available as well.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Mitch White DFA..... celebration Yeah it's quite the swing in value adding Hicks to the pen and removing break only in case of emergency option White from the roster.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Mitch White DFA..... celebration End of an era
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Rangers looking like they will finish ahead of Seattle. Can't wait to cash in on that bet with Stangstag. I should have got better odds after deGrom went on the IL haha
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 I don't think Hicks is the kind of guy you want to extend at FA rates. Fine acquisition while he's pitching well, but he's a decent candidate to complete lose it next year.

Jk just send me the proofs I actually can’t remember Lmao making me do all the work now FFS! I think it was like only $20 but yeah you said you bet the Mariners would finish ahead of the Rangers still and we bet. I guess it would be in the Around Baseball thread. I'll try to find it.

You don't give that up unless you think you can bring him back on a reasonable deal.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Late to the party, mate? You also missed my tweet about Robberse being added to the Hicks return. Forum fail...
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Russians taking over the forum again, lol.
