If you don’t want to hear about that Spanky, we can talk about Royce Lewis starting a rehab in a couple weeks. Dude is legit, scary cyborg at this point. League is on notice. I said good night

BTS, you need to start tonight's GDT. These other amateurs are ruining things.

I'll try to turn this ship around

Maybe instead of dying his hair and getting rocked for Puerto Rico in the WBC he should have been working on locating his fastball. Garbage player and I hate him for ruining my night.

Totally agree with this. He had a problem and he ran away. Not somebody that belongs on a playoff contending team.

Other than low and in to lefties his pitches to the corners of the zone seem remarkably sparse. The guy doesn't know how to paint the corners. He probably has no idea where his pitches are going. Pete Walker has to break him down and start from scratch in season. What a nightmare.

But how does a guy like Berrios, with all the MLB experience and his track record, suddenly have horrible command?

NOTHING MAKES SENSE!

The low hanging fruit here is definitely the contract. Players aren’t robots as you’d hope, or if you’d like to think of them as robots, they may require tuneups on occasion. Sometimes players can develop things on their swings and delivery that can start leading to different negative results potentially. And it’s up to the player to be receptive to input, many dedicated to their craft are the foremost in trying to make adjustments

So the low hanging fruit is he’s like” meh”

He's enjoying his contract

It's such an enigma, even from one inning to the next.

He definitely has a "deer in headlights" look about him since some point last season.

Like, he gets f***ing hammered and isn't even mad. He sits on the bench and stares at his failures on the iPad for the rest of the game.

Are we even sure he’s not just playing candy crush or clash of clans or something?

I mean arguably this is what allows him to have a good inning or two after every other blow up. Being emotionless is usually regarded as a positive trait for a pitcher since there’s a lot in the field that they have no control over after the pitch is released. He might just be as bewildered as everyone is that he’s blowing chunks given his track record and that the stuff is still good.

Is his wife cheating on him? He’s so aloof. No other explanation.

Yeah, it’s ideal to “care”, yet not let your emotions get the better of you. But as fans, that’s all we have to go on. The guy in the 0-20 slump, we’re not sure if that bothers him sleeping at night unless he takes out the Gatorade jug or something.

So the hope is he’s the first one in the building every day, working with the coaches. But when you continue to suck, then it’s natural to question how hard he’s working at it. We’ll never know but speculation is part of fandom

Ultimately I blame the front office for not forcing him to hit the lab in the offseason. He 100% should have shown up this year with some new pitches, or new shapes on his existing pitches.

Everyone else in baseball is developing sweepers and cutters.

There's a problem, it started last year and it has not been dealt with so yes, something should have been worked on. Whoever allowed this vacation to play for the home team screwed up, big. Kirk showed the way when he missed time (understandably) and gave it up. Berrios should have followed suit.

It really has nothing to do with the WBC.

He should have been at Driveline or a similar place all December, using sCiEnCe to design a new trick or two.

He got paid. Sometimes players show you exactly who they are after the contract is signed. I hope that's not him, but can't rule it out.

Unfortunately true. Kikuchi actually seems like the opposite, dude was willing to go down to AAA for the betterment of the team and he looks like he actually tried to fix things in the offseason.

Curve locations look mostly fine

Sinker locations look mostly fine, even though a few drifted into the zone and got hit

The four seamer locations are a nightmare

I return to my theory that he should have spent all off-season developing a cutter and/or a breaking ball variant and he should scrap the four seamer. Sinker/Cutter/Curve

Even if he's not going to change his pitches, his game plan is a nightmare. No high four seamers???

He looked ok at times and the velo is fine but pumping those four seamers down the middle gotta stop.

He was there, so he and Walker and the lab dudes said back at the beginning of ST. It was in a special before the first game against the Pirates.

I don't believe them / didn't see it / will still pretend they did nothing

Either way, they didn't seem to finish. And he should have been working with Walker in Spring, not dying his hair and f***ing off. Shame on him.

Maybe this all stemmed from a HBP and now he’s scared to nibble corners??

Has there been a major HBP injury Berrios was involved in at some point between 2021-2022? Maybe in spring training of 2022?

Looks like Berrios hit two players during spring training 2022: Didi Gregorius and Kyle Schwarber. Doesn't look like either of them were major but Didi did have an elbow injury bothering him in 2021 and he sucked in 2022 but I don't think that would cause Berrios to become scared to nibble corners. He did also hit Kole Calhoun in his dreadful home opening performance last year.

Thanks for checking haha. Idk just throwing some ideas out there. Seems weird he’d all of a sudden “lose” his command which is why I was thinking maybe its mental and he’s scared or something

I was hoping this would be the big "Aha!" moment but it must be something else. But I definitely still think it's mental. Can't be a coincidence that as soon as the ink is dry on his contract and people have expectations for him that he turns into a pumpkin. Maybe he's feeling the same kind of pressure he did in his rookie year when he posted an 8.02 ERA?
