Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 Don't kid yourself you'd still find a reason to complain. You aren't happy that Vlad shares pictures of him in the gym because according to your infinite wisdom only people that don't regularly work out do this. Now the guy very well may actually be in the best shape of his entire life and you still aren't happy. FFS. If you read my post, I said I would be very happy for 2024 but make no mistake would not like to extend a lifelong fatass to a 10 year deal. That is all.

That is all. Yeah it's very fair to question what kind of shape he will be in several years into the future as he seems to have yo yoed up and down in the past. He's still likely the most gifted hitter the organization has produced so it's not an easy question to answer with regards to a future extension. If he shows up in great shape the next two season with 150 wRC+ type of production to match I'd still do the extension in hopes that he has the personal pride to maintain this type of conditioning. Even having said that I don't know how much a factor his conditioning has been with regards to his offensive performance in recent seasons.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 Craft a deal with financial and opt out incentives to help keep Vlad in shape. If Jays are going to lose Bichette, which seems likely, at least find a way to extend Vlad at a reasonable deal while he has 2 more arbitration years.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 Polanco is good and the team doesn't have a 3B I'd rather use internal players, depends on the pitcher incoming though. That s*** would need to be set up.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 Polanco is good and the team doesn't have a 3B Polanco is a butcher on D, doesn’t really fit the team’s MO
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 Is Tampa selling Aranda? lol... no way, he's cost controllable.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 Polanco is good and the team doesn't have a 3B Polanco is horrible defensively at 3B isn't he? We cant go from Chapman to him defensively even if his bats better. Rather just overpay Chapman slightly to keep the "Ohtani whisperer" around in his contract year.
MikeM3 Verified Member Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 Because we have no 3b or LF and the pitching FAs are better than the position players.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 Because we have no 3b or LF and the pitching FAs are better than the position players. It needs to be fluid though, is all.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 The team isn't really in a position to be choosy. They have no 3B and the only 3+ win option in FA probably costs 150M. They need an everyday OF, and the only 3+ win (maybe) option probably costs 200M. Swapping Kikuchi for Polanco gives them a 2-3 win option at 3B at 10.5M this year with a team option for 2025. Salary is basically a wash. Only instead of having to target Chapman, they move to a market that includes Yamamoto, Imanaga, Snell, Montgomery, Stroman, Paxton, Montas etc... Even if it's just Paxton they sign, it's Polanco (1/10.5 + 12M team option for 2025) Paxton (1/10?) vs. Chapman (6/150?) Kikichi (1/12) For basically the same projected 2024 WAR

Kikuchi for all his warts has been really durable, and removing him in place of a high risk pitcher like Paxton is greatly increasing the probability that the team is going to need to dip into it's pitching depth.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 Polanco for Kikuchi would make a lot of sense but the left side of our infield would be horrendous defensively. If it results in an upgrade to the rotation though I’d be content with it. The team clearly has money to spend, how much and on who obviously matters but there is no way we’re not taking on some sort of significant contract either via FA or trade at this point and I much rather that money get spent on the strength of the market.

Well, yeah. But I think the team can do better than Paxton on the SP market. And I think that even in the worst case scenario where none of the other SPs take their money, Paxton in for Kikuchi doesn't really move the needle much either way. I'd expect 1-2 WAR from either. But they also have 150M in cash to deploy in that scenario.

Plenty of arms available who you could sign for a similar price and who could provide similar WAR. Chapman is really the only solid 3B available on the market now. Not sure he gets 150M, but geez that would be crazy. Would like him around $80-100M at 4 or 5 years, but who knows. Like you said the Jays can't be really picky when it comes to third base now. Have to target guys like Polanco or even roll the dice on someone like Moncada. Doesn't hurt to even sign a vet as insurance to be on the bench like Longoria or Donaldson if they came cheap.

Jays offered him north of a 100M according to Heyman prior to them offering the QO, so he wants big dough man. I ain't cool with that.

Meh, so would rather go the trade route and try to get a 2-3 WAR third baseman. Don't feel comfortable paying Chapman that much. His defensive skills likely regress over that contract and his offensive numbers aren't anything to write home about.

I think the Jays have enough internal options to fill 3rd base with competent defense - and while they may not hit much - neither does Chapman. If you're going to spend the coin - I would prefer them to spend it on Bellinger since he's a much better hitter and the much-needed lefty bat. The OF defence would remain strong. No matter who we put at third - it will be a defensive drop off. The team has a lot of holes on infield defense - Bichette is below average - first base is below average. Losing Chapman isn't helping - who plays third? Orelvis, Biggio, Schneider, Horwitz, Espinal? The latter would do a good job defensively I think. At some point we need our farm system to give us something - although our farm is bottom five apparently.
