Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2022 Posted August 11, 2022 I've never said he beens good, but that there is no reason to suggest he won't revert to his historical performance. Do you disagree with this? I would like to think he’s way more in line with his career norms. Its not completely untypical for any player to just have a bad season. It’s just unfortunate it comes in Year 1 after they handed him the largest contract in franchise history. We certainly need him to perform as #3 consistently going forward. He’s definitely show glimpses of being his former self and best self. Those pair of 13 strikeout games come to mind. That’s why his season has been very frustrating.

Do you disagree with this? I think it's definitely possible that at least for this season he may not revert to his historical performance. I don't think he's going to pitch like this for his contract, he's better than this and he has five seasons of performances that would indicate that. But it's possible he can't turn it around this year for whatever reason has led him here, since his underlying numbers aren't really indicating a guy who should have have a better ERA. His xERA is horrific at 5.48, his FIP is only a bit better than that. Only his xFIP shows some hope, but that's not really taking into account the fact that he's getting hit really hard overall. The opposing hard hit percentage is way higher than any other season in his career, he's getting barreled at a higher rate. It makes sense that he's giving up this many home runs. Something is different this year for him, and unless there's a change, there's a decent chance that he'll continue being inconsistent and getting hit hard for the remainder of the year.

He's leaking fastballs into barrels, I believe, it's his command on particular nights with that pitch I think. Release point adjustments maybe, but it's odd. Idk.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2022 Posted August 11, 2022 Berrios had rough stretches with the Twinkies as well. He was called inconsistent when he was with them. Essentially this is the nature of Berrios / baseball.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2022 Posted August 13, 2022 Hopefully Berrios is good today but in reality we have absolutely no idea what we’re going to get out of him. And considering what he makes that’s not a very good feeling. Take a look at his history during the past 3 years or so. That will give you an idea what to expect. This aged well lol
