67 seasons behind the mic starting in 1950 at only 22 years of age. If you want to know why he was the best, listen to this clip of the Kirk Gibson homerun in game one of the 1988 world series. After he calls the home run off the bat, he doesn't say another word. Just lets the atmosphere of the crowd do the talking. Great instincts as a broadcaster. RIP.

Yeah I was thinking the same. I don't think he was in attendance during the festivities. I suspect he had been sick for a while and wanted to keep everything quiet.
