From Winners/Whiners:

The Blue Jays turned things around at the end of the first half after suffering through a stretch in which the team lost five of six games. Returning home, the Jays reverses their fortunes by winning five of six games to close the first half. The Blue Jays start the second half in 3rd place in the AL East and with a 2-game lead over 4th place Boston heading into Friday's series opener. On Friday night, the Blue Jays offense came alive to destroy Red Sox pitching in a 28-5 drubbing. Left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had a team-record 6 hits and five RBI to lead a Blue Jays attack that set team records for runs, 28, and hits, 29, in a single game. Toronto scored 4, 7 and then 11 runs in the 3rd through 5th innings to put the game on ice.

The Blue Jays have utilized a strong everyday lineup, ranking 8th in baseball in runs per game. The Jays are also 4th in slugging, 3rd in on base percentage and 8th in home runs per game. They scored six or more runs in three of their final five games before the break as well. On the mound on Saturday afternoon will be Alek Manoah. Manoah made the American League All-Star team on the strength of a 10-4 first half record and an impressive 15 quality starts out of 18. He also leads the Jays in innings, WHIP, WAR and ERA. In July, Manoah is 1-2 with a 3.15 ERA in four starts. Manoah has faced Boston twice this season and is 1-0 with a 1.77 ERA thus far against the BoSox.

Just as the Boston Red Sox appeared to be getting healthier, newly returned starter Chris Sale was hit with a come-backer on the pinky on his left throwing hand against the hated Yankees to close out the first half. The broken digit will sideline the former Cy Young winner indefinitely and further strain the Red Sox depleted pitching staff. The Red Sox have struggled with injuries for much of the season, particularly with their starting staff. On Friday night, the team turned to righty Nathan Eovaldi as he made his third start since returning from a back injury. Eovaldi was not up to the challenge as he lasted just 2.2 innings, giving up 8 hits and 9 runs before departing. The free-falling Red Sox are now 2-8 in their last ten games.

The Red Sox may need to turn to their potent offense to keep them afloat as they sort out pitching issues both in the starting rotation and the bullpen. The Sox are 7th in runs per game, 1st in doubles per game, and 8th in slugging percentage. They did not, however, score more than five runs in a game in their final seven games of the first half including a 27-3 run discrepancy at the hands of the Yankees over the final two games of that series. On the mound on Saturday will be rookie Kutter Crawford. Crawford has made 13 appearances this season including four starts. He is 1-1 with a 3.10 ERA in his four starts. In those four starts, Crawford has pitched 20.1 innings and given up 15 hits. He has struck out 24 in those starts and walked just four batters in his four starts.

I asked this yesterday but will ask again today... why did Sportsnet remove the strike zone box?

To be honest, I think it's a better viewing experience to not bitch about every call since it's harder to determine strike vs ball on each pitch.

Think its just against the Sox games; NESN doesn't do strikezones
