Stuff like this doesn't work in trades of this magnitude, regardless of what the "calculator" suggests.

Pearson is basically a nothingburger right now and Martinez, while he has "value", is going to be perceived all over the place because his underlying metrics are pretty horrific. So now you're essentially talking about Moreno and Tiedemann?

A guy like James Wood makes this deal, because he has legitimate freakshow type upside. I don't perceive those packages to be equal at all.

It's just meant to be an illustration

Some teams in some contexts would value Orelvis a lot. Some would still like Pearson. Some might have a $40M figure on Tiedemann... swap out Pearson for Frasso or Zulu if you want to make it sexier.

um...that's why it values Pearson at only $3.3M and Orelvis at $13.9M - while someone like Wood is at $25.6M - more than Tiedemann

juuuuuuuuuuuuuust finish the f***ing trade so all the other trades can happen

i need to know which bags of s*** are being stuffed into Blue Jays jerseys NOW

The deal must get done whether he's in it or not. SD was just trying to stay under the luxury tax this year (Washington was paying Hosmer this year, SD for the remaining years). I'm sure the Owner will just say f*** it, I'll pay the luxury tax.

I think they were also hoping to not exceed by $40M. If they're 40M over their top draft pick gets pushed back 10 spots.

Eric Hosmer is such a joke, wonder if he's gonna call out Soto for hitting a Grand Slam on a 3-0 count now.

Right, but the point is that when a player of this caliber is traded (Soto), the other team isn't going to compare these arbitrary numbers and perceive the returns as equal. They're going to look for certain traits/upsides/etc. in the players going back..

The reality is this: Abrams and Hassell are highly drafted ~Top 25 prospects with pretty safe floors because they have few flaws (Hassell is supposedly looking even better in CF than expected) . James Woods looks like he has MVP type potential and may be a Top 5 prospect in a year. Mackenzie Gore is a former uber-prospect who is at least already in the MLB (albeit hurt). The other pitcher they got is hitting triple digits and is one of the biggest breakouts in the lower minors this season.

That package is considerably more enticing to most teams than Moreno + Tiedemann, reclamation project Nate Pearson, and Orelvis Martinez who's floor is basically non-existent because he's running a ~.200 BA with few walks, lots of strikeouts, and a swing that may not work at all in the MLB.

That's fair - that calculator is just a bit of fun to try and find a comparable deal. The deal is only comparable because it includes Hosmer at -$35M. Obviously SD package of prospects is better than the one proposed from the Jays. I was just pointing out that the calculator values seem to account for the flaws you've identified. Obviously teams will have their own calculators/value assessments.

#BlueJays seen as very busy in pitching market. One name I've heard come up a couple times as a possible target is Raisel Iglesias, who Jays have pursued before. Three yrs, $48 million left on deal after '22. K% is excellent, 33%. Many possibilities in play of course.

God please no. Not Iglesias.

We have way too much money tied into pitching contracts, don't need to coinflip another one for years to come.

Yeah the amount of money behind arms is already somewhat uncomfortable

I don't see how else Toronto brings in a true backend RP though...

Still don't know why the hell we tied up 36M into Kikuchi who was pathetic during the 2nd half of last year to be our 5th starter. The warning signs were there and we could have used that money for the bullpen instead...

Surely there’s no way the Jays would take on all or even most of the contract. I’d rather send out a better asset to get the Angels to eat salary.

Just f***in do it, we have nothing coming up for the bullpen any time soon. If we end up with a bunch of above average guys in the pen its not even a problem. Should be cheap prospect-wise too

Eh. Its done/water under the bridge - we hoped for a Ray. He still has the stuff, we'll see what happens.

This year will be the brunt of it. Next two years are 10M each and if he does remotely well, can be flipped for decent prospects.

We wanted Verlander, Mahle, Ray before Kikuchi - just never happened.

Long contracts for relief pitching is questionable though, especially a guy who'll be 35 when the contract wraps up. Injury risk. Velo also dropped this year, so that'll keep trending down.

Blue Jays closing in on deal with Marlins for Zach Pop, per multiple sources. Other pieces expected to be involved. Jordan Groshans believed to be headed to Miami.

Hopefully he's turned a corner after his injured list stint. It sounds like the club completely overhauled his mechanics so time will tell if the signing produces any value or not.

Hearing of Jays players disappointed to see them not doing anything yet (and probably seeing the first place Yankees get better). Still 4.5 hours to go however and they are working on pitching, and maybe a lefty bat.
