Omar Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2022 Posted June 4, 2022 How do the Jays get Jano and Kirk both playing at the same time on a regular basis? On June 20 max pitchers on the activer roster are supposed to go down to 13. Assuming Atkins doesn't pull the trigger on a move before then someones going down (Vasquez?). Why not bring up Moreno then and carry three catchers the rest of the way. Get Kirk and Moreno to catch once a week and Jano to take the bulk of catching duties. Free up Kirk while he is on fire and get Moreno major league experience. I know catchers need their reps in AAA but this team could be crazy good if we field a Zimmer/Tapia free lineup on a consistent basis. If Moreno can compete at the big league level it would usher the way to pull the trigger on a trade involving Kirk while his value peaks.

Moreno should be getting work in a 3B and 2B in addition to C. The combinations could be so amazing. 1. CF Springer 2. C Kirk/Moreno/Jansen 3. 1B Guerrero Jr 4. SS Bichette 5. RF Hernandez 6. DH Kirk/Jansen/Chapman 7. 2B Espinal 8. LF Gurriel 9. 3B Chapman/Moreno

Omar Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2022 Posted June 4, 2022 LOL...depending on how Moreno develops, could we trade Jano? He handles pitchers better than Kirk. Either way, a great problem to have.

I assume (barring trade) that Groshans will move to third base after Chapman leaves at the end of the 2023 season. Then we would have: C Some combination of Jano, Kirk, Moreno 1B Vladdy 2B Espinal 3B Groshans SS Bo Outfield: Springer, Teo....and who ever else (maybe Gurriel but I think he gets moved)

Either way, a great problem to have. As good as Danny is, I feel like the league will figure out how to pitch to him and we should sell high. I don't think he is as good of a hitter Kirk or Moreno will be and they are 23/22. But that's just me, we could just as well see Moreno transition into another spot like 3B.

Look, after Teo, Kirk is my favourite player on this team. The guy is only 23 and a beast. But come the playoffs I would take Jano behing the dish because we are in win now mode.

There are tons of options. Look, after Teo, Kirk is my favourite player on this team. The guy is only 23 and a beast. But come the playoffs I would take Jano behing the dish because we are in win now mode. You know, interestingly enough, Kirk seems to call a better game than Jansen, imo. A lot of our pitchers have had their best games of the season pitching to Kirk, and some of their worst against Jansen. Could just be small sample noise, but game calling is a thing. Also, Kirk appears to be the better pitch framer as well and has a cannon behind the plate. I'm not sure how much better defensively Jansen even if anymore.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted June 5, 2022 Posted June 5, 2022 Mariners Acquire Ryan Borucki, Designate Mike Ford By Mark Polishuk | June 4, 2022 at 8:03pm CDT The Mariners have announced a trade with the Blue Jays that will see left-hander Ryan Borucki head to Seattle in exchange for corner infielder Tyler Keenan. The M’s have also designated infielder Mike Ford for assignment to create 40-man roster space for Borucki. The Jays designated Borucki for assignment on Tuesday, and today’s trade officially ends the southpaw’s lengthy stay in the Toronto organization. Borucki was a 15th-round pick for the Blue Jays back in 2012, and made an impressive debut by posting a 3.87 ERA over 97 2/3 innings and 17 starts in his 2018 rookie season. However, elbow problems (which required a bone spur surgery) hampered him for much of the next two years, and the Jays turned Borucki into a reliever for the 2020 campaign. This transition seemed promising, as Borucki had a 2.70 ERA and 28.8% strikeout rate in 16 2/3 frames in the shortened season, though a 16.4% walk rate was a big red flag. Beyond the injuries, walks and home runs were Borucki’s biggest problems over his last 53 1/3 Major League innings, which saw him post a 5.57 ERA since the start of the 2019 season. Since Borucki is out of minor league options, the Blue Jays had to pursue the DFA route in order to remove him from their 40-man roster, and the Mariners jumped in to arrange a trade. Roenis Elias and Anthony Misiewicz are the only left-handers in the Seattle bullpen and neither southpaw is having a particularly strong year, so while Borucki himself hasn’t done well (9.95 ERA in 6 1/3 IP) over limited action in 2022, the M’s are hoping that a change of scenery could help the 28-year-old get on track. Ford has appeared in 15 games with the Mariners this season, hitting .179./378/.214 over 37 plate appearances and working mostly as a DH and pinch-hitter. The M’s signed Ford to a minor league deal in March, and this is already the third time that Ford has been designated in less than six weeks’ time. After Seattle initially DFA’ed him in late April, the Giants acquired Ford in a trade, only for the Mariners to re-acquire Ford a couple of weeks later when San Francisco themselves sent Ford to the DFA wire. Keenan was a fourth-round pick for the Mariners out of the University of Mississippi during the 2020 draft. The 23-year-old has spent both of his pro seasons at the high-A level, hitting .212/.317/.367 with nine home runs over 376 total plate appearances. Keenan has played both corner infield spots, with the bulk of his time coming as a third baseman.

Kirk's framing/receiving low in the zone is amazing. Better than Jansen. Jansen, imo, is far better in the upper half of the strike zone. Last season Kirk made some big gaffes defensively speaking, but he was green and is getting better. At the end of the day, his body is a big concern. The roly poly body shape is a concern. Then again, remember Kirby Puckett, he made out okay.

I think there's a pretty good chance we trade them both. Not this year of course, but if Moreno comes up and proves he's not out of place at the MLB level, I think we probably sell high on Jansen at the deadline or the off-season and keep the younger, more cost controlled Kirk. Kirk and Moreno should be a fine combo for the next couple years and then if and when Moreno establishes himself as a bonafide starting catcher, we move off of Kirk when he's 25/26 before his body completely betrays him.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2022 Posted June 5, 2022 So is the scrub we got from Seattle better than the scrub we gave them? I actually thought Borucki had a shot to be a good one. Sucks.
Solaxys Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2022 Posted June 5, 2022 Passan thinks Jays should trade KC for a deal involving Andrew Benintendi (LHH, OF, Rental), Scott Barlow (RHP, Relief, 2-yr control), and Josh Staumont (RHP, Relief, 3-yr control). Both pitchers are gas-throwing swing-and-miss pitchers.

Sucks. He's kinda crap, but he doesn't have to be added to the 40 man for a few seasons. So it's a lot of control and maybe he finds something before we have to cut him loose. Odds are he's nothing, but so far he's having a better time in his second go around at A+.

Would be awesome to see him tear a new ******* in Red Sox pitching

The kid literally looks like an elite player in every aspect except baserunnin (++hit tool), and he's under control for the future. Move flash in the pan Jansen or unload Moreno for a package.

JFD Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2022 Posted June 5, 2022 This post is dumn! But worth a like for the first statement alone
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2022 Posted June 5, 2022 Who would you trade for a few months of Benintendi? They definitely aren’t touching the top prospects like Moreno and Martinez. Tidemann is definitely moving himself into untouchable area as well if he hasn’t already. A guy like Otto Lopez in a package that contains controlable reliever’s makes sense on the higher end. But I honestly think they would be able to make a deal for a package of mid tier prospects. It really depends on how the market shapes up but KC is going nowhere and everyone knows they have to move him because they won’t qualify him either.

InsideThePark Verified Member Posted June 5, 2022 Posted June 5, 2022 I know it's not perfect but according to Baseball Trade Values those 3 Royals have a combined median value of 43 million surplus. Roughly equivalent to Jansen, Groshans, and Jimenez(43.1 million). Just trying to gauge an estimate. I wouldn't do that trade.
