More logical would be if top team only has to win 1 game to advance while wild card team has to win 2, but I guess the league wants to ensure a 3 game series for financial reasons, and in that format the max a series would go is 2 games. I understand why they want to do something like that but I don’t think it would work.

I get why they want to do that. So a scrub 78-84 team that finds its way into the playoffs has the odds stacked so heavily against it winning the series that it's a rare occurrence. Because as we know, a 70 win team does have a reasonable shot at winning a three game set over a 90 win team throughout the course of the year. It would be far too embarrassing if it happened in the playoffs more than once in a blue moon.

Basically the owners want the extra revenue of playoffs while still trying to maintain the integrity of the regular season. What's the point of having a 162 game season when a 93 win team has a 35% chance of being ousted by a team in the 75-85 win range in a three game playoff?

I never looked at it like that. I still believe, if you win 20 games more in a season than the scrub team, having home field advantage for all the games should be good enough but they also are talking about letting you choose your opponent, If your team still cant beat a scrub team, after all that then you are not a championship team.

and I think Kenny Ken has his example all screwed up. A best of 3 has first team to win 2 advances. But Ghost win my god what a joke.

Bro, it’s baseball. A team with 20 less wins can still be the favorite/or pick em depending who is on the mound. The NBA recently tinkered with their play-in process for 7&8 seeds. Not the same but the higher seeds aren’t one and done if they lose and lower seeds need to win 2x

Imagine if you’re playing the lesser Mets team and line up for your winner-take-all WC

game and a healthy Degrom is on the mound.

So in that way, it makes sense if expanding the teams

I understand all that, and I understand that you may be all for it, but I just dont like the changes done recently, example pitcher must face 3 batters, start a runner at 2nd for extra innings, double headers are 7 ininngs, sorry I just think its another bad move for baseball. Remember the AL East had 4 teams with 91+ wins last year, and the Central Division had 4 teams below 500, and now you want to award the Central division champ with a "Ghost win" f*** that!

MLB today indicated a willingness to miss a month of games and took a more threatening tone than yesterday, sources briefed on the day’s first meeting between MLB and the Players Association tell me, @Ken_Rosenthal and @FabianArdaya. Full context of conversation not yet known.

Someone should create some sort of algorithm and assign sports reporters (really all reporters) a rating. I think it would catch on

Seriously man. They post stuff on Twitter and the comments can be like “dude, you have a rating of 4, stop embarrassing yourself with this s***”. It’d make them think twice about their “sources”

I don't mind the ghost win idea but it should only be a thing if the division winner reaches a certain threshold above the WC team. lets say the division winner has to have at least 5 more wins than the WC team to be awarded a ghost win. A division winner getting a free game against a team playing in a tougher division that won more games than them in a would be a complete sham. Last year for example the Astros would have still gotten a ghost win over the Mariners(5 game difference), but the Jays/White Sox series(2 game difference) would have been on even terms. Brewers get a ghost win against the Phillies(13 game difference), Braves get a ghost win over the Reds(5 game difference).

Most of the time the division winners will be good enough to be more than 5 games better than seed 6 and 7, but the occasional year where 1 division has 4 great teams, or occasional year where 1 division is so bad only 1 team barely breaks .500 the advantage doesn't apply

Starting to sound like a deal might happen tonight.

You misunderstood how that worked. Top 2 division winners in each league get a bye, so last year from the AL, Astros and Rays would have got the bye. The White sox (93 wins) would get a ghost win over Toronto (91 wins), Yanks would play Bosox

Lets hope so

Owners aren't feeling pressured enough yet. Seems like they aren't concerned about losing the month of April.

Attempts to despair the MLBPA will continue.

Well, I mean you could say the exact same thing about the MLBPA...

The best thing that could happen would be for the fans to boycott the same number of games as the ones that are lost. That would send a very, very clear message to both sides for the future. It won't happen though.

It seems pretty clear it is the owners that are uncompromising.

This feels like fantasy baseball owners arguing about minutiae.

That's insane if so... they all profit.

Missing games primarily because you can't agree on a playoff format would be the height of absurdity. But this is MLB, so it will probably happen.

Yeah, that'd be hard to swallow. Get them on the f***ing field already.

Just realized that it's literally you updating this. You're doing god's work. Ive been refreshing all night.

My guess is season gets pushed back roughly a week (154 game season), players still get full pay and owners get 14 team playoff for one year.

They'd better do something longer than one year on a deal.
