Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2021 Posted October 2, 2021 Biggio wasn't hitting in Buffalo in a decent sample size but gets a start in a win or bust game. Jansen starting over Kirk is also some brain dead s***. Kirk is not that bad defensively, or am I missing something? If Kirk wasn't dicked around while he was raking 4 weeks ago, we might be in a much better position today. I'll never understand all the love Jansen gets. Good takes
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2021 Posted October 2, 2021 Good takes The Biggio rant has some merit given that Biggio had mostly struggled during his time in AAA and I don't see how you could have realistically expected such a nice performance from him offensively. However the Jansen hate is just so off base that it's totally laughable. To anyone paying even the slightest bit of attention it should be painfully obvious that Jansen has been an absolute masher since returning from his initial hamstring injury. The time in AAA working with the swing doctors down there seems to have unlocked his offensive potential to a great degree. If you look back to June after he returned after the initial injury he has posted a 195 WRC+ in the 79 plate appearances, and that is with a BABIP of only .315 so it's not reliant in the slightest on batted ball fortune as he has been mashing with an ISO of .411. If you are to remove the month of April where Jansen struggled his worse you find that he has produced a WRC+ of 147 in his last 148 plate appearances and been good for 1.8 FWAR. For the season as a whole Kirk is only 5 points ahead of Jansen in WRC+ however Kirk is a full win behind in value with similar overall plate appearances as Jansen is a far better defender than Kirk. It is super obvious who the starting catcher on this club should be right now and it certainly isn't Kirk.

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted October 2, 2021 Posted October 2, 2021 Jansen and Kirk look like they'll make one hell of a solid tandem next season. Too bad one of them isn't a LHB. I'd love to see them move Moreno to 3B. Jays could save a lot of payroll room if Biggio can bounce back at 2B and they can fill out 3B from within with Espinal/Smith and then eventually Moreno next season. Then use that payroll savings to keep the rotation together, bring back Ray and Matz. Maybe spend a little more on the pen too.

If Moreno demolishes AAA early next season and comes up and produces as a 3B, Jays will be a powerhouse for years to come. The other top IF prospect Groshans has been mentioned as a future corner OF by several writers. In any event, I look forward to the day when Grich is the 25th/26th man or off the team entirely. The thing about Jansen is that a league average BABIP is all it takes for him to mash. .315 is 85 points higher than his career average. Imagine what Vladdy would do on a run where he had a .391 BABIP...
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2021 Posted October 2, 2021 The Biggio rant has some merit given that Biggio had mostly struggled during his time in AAA and I don't see how you could have realistically expected such a nice performance from him offensively. Well, generally speaking when MLB players are being evaluated in the minors regarding when they are ready to come back up, alot of it is process related rather than results oriented. If he's having great ABs and just finding gloves with his contact, it doesn't mean he isn't ready. What they want to see is A) is he having good PAs and making good decisions, and if they have recommended changes or adjustments, is he consistently showing those adjustments in his PAs. The results are not the focus. Nobody on this board can speak intelligently as to whether he was ready to be called up or not based on a slash line and statements like yours above are missing about 99% of the information being evaluated, and are therefore... worthless. That said, nobody realistically expects any player to get 3 hits in a game no matter who they are. There's lots of players who, if they do get 3 hits it's not a real shock, but expecting 3 hits in a game is not an expectation for any hitter.
