GDT: Yankees @ Blue Jays (Game 1/3)

If the Jays go 4-1 the rest of the way, then there's probably a glimmer of a chance, but that would mean the Red Sox would have to go 3-2 and IMO they are more likely to go 4-1 than the Jays are. That's not even factoring the M's.

 

I think the Jays are going to run out of time, or possibly already have. Maybe they surprise and go 5-0 the rest of the way, but they may have peaked in September about a week too early.

 

They really just needed another few games of hot hitting to extend that great streak and we'd be in a spot right now. f***ing frustrating that it looks like they're gonna fall just short like this.

 

Or imagine they didn't throw the ball away to lose that Detroit game. Or if Charlie brought in Romano instead of Hand in that Seattle game with the bases loaded. So many f***ing games pissed away. Im sure we'll be putting together a big list once the season is over. I can think of 5 more off the top of my head.

It's exaggerated in the sense that we can't determine how many wins it may have cost the team, but I don't think it's exaggerated in terms of playing a factor. These are human beings. They are big leaguers who had to play in non-MLB facilities for most of their home games, and while in theory baseball is baseball wherever it is played, I think there is a real difference between big league amenities and whatever they got in Dunedin/Buffalo. Nevermind the advantage of having an actual home crowd and not 2000-5000 locals mostly cheering for the other team or cheering for the sake of cheering since they didn't have a dog in the fight.

 

If the Jays were allowed to play in Toronto 1-2 months earlier, I wouldn't be shocked at all if it meant the difference between being 1 game back of WC2 and being in a WC spot.

Yeah I agree I don’t think we can be too harsh on the players this year. For a lot of them, its been their first full season at the MLB level. They had to go through 3 different “home fields” where the majority of fans were actually rooting against them vs New York and Boston.

 

Making the fake playoffs in 2020 set somewhat unrealistic expectations on this team for 2021. Its easy to blame Charlie for being a dolt, but inexperience likely played a large role here too.

 

Even saying all that, they actually surpassed their projections for this year.

 

Absolutely no excuses for 2022 though. They should be competing for 1st place in the division.

The Yankees regularly rest Stanton and Judge. The fans and media are often annoyed at this, as the Blue Jays fans would be if Guerrero was rested once or twice a month. In fact they did do this his first year, and people hated it, and people hated it the one day Charlie rested him, first day of August.

 

It's a valid topic. Do you think Guerrero should play 161 games year in year out? 155 would be better, rest him Wednesday on the road 5 times. Stupid Charlie likes to rest them Sunday or Holiday at home.

I should be the MVP because I'm 2nd in a lot of categories that I lost the lead in during an 1-21 stretch in the key games. That other guy pitched 130 great innings and basically tied me in homers.. but screw him. I think in that Seattle game they also lost the winning run in the top of the 9th because the string of the glove might of touched the baserunner as he slid into home.

 

Seemed like a couple of posters actually thought the string did brush the baserunner, nevertheless seemed like a total violation of the 'conclusive' evidence rule.

 

What if balls 2 inches out of the strike zone were called properly top of the 9th last Monday night in Tampa?

The absolute one that got me was game 2 of the double header against Boston

 

Verdugo's ball had less exit velocity and similar launch angle to Vlad's but went 1 foot farther and an inch over the fence. Vlad's looked gone for sure off the bat and caught.

 

I still can't believe that ball was caught. There is variation among balls, they also apparently use a humidor in Toronto now.

 

Maybe Vlad's ball was from a fresh batch that they just got out of the humidor. Maybe Verdugo's had been sitting out for a while.

 

Maybe a little old lady was told funny gossip giggled, and wound the strings tighter when crafting Verdugo's ball, and was sloppy with Vlad's.

 

I still can't believe that didn't leave the park.

I remember that game and I was in the camp saying that replay being overturned was the right call.

 

The wrong call was sending Valera in the first place. Vlad was up next. Also Semien should have done better there. Also if we had Dyson at the time, he probably would have been able to score.
