max silver Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2021 Posted August 21, 2021 Surprise surprise the Jays squandered yet another opportunity at a victory. I really don't understand how somebody as outright stupid as Charlie Montoyo managed to get hired as a major league manager. The man is incapable of adapting to game situations or learning from his mistakes. There have been multiple times this season where the opposition has been crashing so hard to first base on bunt opportunities that it is borderline impossible to successfully sacrifice. Yet the bunt stays on. Have any of these late game bunt plays worked out yet? There is a continuous string of failures for Jays players to get the bunt down, yet Charlie keeps calling for the bunt anyway. Why in the world would you take the bat out of the best remaining hitter in the lineup with the winning run already on second base? This was completely baffling for so many reasons. The pitcher was struggling to throw strikes and had walked the first two batters in the inning. Asking a right handed batter to bunt against a semi wild lefty throwing 100 MPH with the first baseman basically standing on top of the plate is an almost impossible task. You had a very good quality selective hitter coming up to bat. Why gift an out to a pitcher who has been struggling to throw strikes in order to bring up the bottom of the lineup? You have the teams fastest runner already in scoring position with multiple opportunities to score. There is a very good chance Kirk can work a walk if not secure a hit to score the winning run. If Kirk wasn't even going to be given the opportunity to hit in a big situation, why the f*** was he still catching in such a close game with only a 1 run lead in the 8th inning? He's primarily in the lineup for his bat, but if he's going to be yanked in favor of a bench scrub at the first opportunity to bunt then you might as well bring in the better defensive catcher with a late lead. This one really got my blood boiling, I watch sports to be entertained but s*** like this is going to end up being bad for my sanity.
