RustyTrombone Verified Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 According to multiple reports Bluejays have acquired Nats closer Brad Hand. Appears to be Riley Adams heading the other way. Not a good move imo unless this is verrrrry cheap. Hand isn't much of upgrade over what we already have.

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 This is a bad trade, Hand has been terrible this year and Riley Adams isn't nothing
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 A necessary trade Hand should help and has some upside. Looks like his velo is actually UP this year... It's annoying that they could have just claimed or signed Hand but those are past misses and you can't let them cloud present decisions Adams had no place on the team going forward other than as a sometimes backup catcher BUT his minor league numbers and skill set had some appeal so to see him traded for 1/3 of a season of a rental reliever making market rate money and having a so-so year is a bit disappointing. You would have liked to see Toronto maximize his trade value somehow but evidently the league does not value him much. Oh well. Good to be buying. More please.
InvincibleTiger Verified Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 So...about what time will Semien and Ray be dealt?
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 So...about what time will Semien and Ray be dealt? Never, lol. Shut up about it.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 Inb4 Charlie giving Hand the next 10 save opportunities while he blows half of them
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 I guess we really did need a hand with the bullpen but this move feels meh

Adams is 100% redundant but holy s*** Bard Hand kinda sucks this year. Why not go after Daniel Hudson? Probably wouldnt cost much more than Adams.

InvincibleTiger Verified Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 Never, lol. Shut up about it. I just want to add a top 100 prospect or two to our collection.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 This is a bad trade, Hand has been terrible this year and Riley Adams isn't nothing Its a good trade. Hand is an upgrade to like 4 of our bullpen pitchers right now and all it cost was Adams
RustyTrombone Verified Member Posted July 29, 2021 Author Posted July 29, 2021 I guess this trade shows just how sky high prices are this deadline because in the past this would have been overpay I feel like.
Signal Verified Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 I just want to add a top 100 prospect or two to our collection. This team is competing for a playoff spot and they deserve that opportunity. That experience whether successful or not, will help the young players down the road. Selling at this point would be telling your players you have no faith in them.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 Probably the first time I've ever been luke warm about getting some Hand.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 Not bad. Wasn't Hand highly rumoured to sign with the Jays this year? Adams is pretty much blocked so not much of a loss there.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 Not a fan of giving up anything worthwhile for a rental. We could have just signed him outright before the season began with our payroll figures being so low.
metafour Verified Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 Meh, Hand hasnt been that good. No, he hasn't - but then you need to ask why he's striking out 3 batters fewer per 9 despite throwing harder than he has in each of the previous two seasons. I'm sure that there is optimism that they can make an "adjustment" of some sort and potentially got elite production out of him for the remainder of the season.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 Cleveland put him on waivers last year just so someone else would pickup that contract. Teams could’ve had him for just cash. But Hand was really good 2-3 years ago and he hopefully bumps Dolis down in the BP order, the price wasn’t too steep. I’m just a tad surprised we got a rental when they’re probably looking for long term solutions. Rays and Yankees made notable improvements while we continue to make incremental ones. There’s still time before the deadline, there will probably be more moves to come.

Only they can't seem to beat the Rays or Red Sox. So are they really competing?

I have no faith in this team to do anything in the playoffs. It's not the year to be spending prospect capital on rentals. Particularly with that contract attached.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 Lukewarm would be an understatement. Not a bad move or a good move. Just a move.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 Meh, Hand hasnt been that good. Keep in mind Robbie Ray didn’t look good either before we acquired him, things can change. Hand has some pedigree.
