Lots looks ridiculous in hindsight for sure but if he didn't lose the weight it's entirely possible he stays the same player he was the last couple of years. I think everyone's thrilled that Vlad looks like the superstar that he should be.

Thanks captain, I'm sure they are too.

None of Thomas, Johnson or Ruth were fat as f*** at 20 years old.

This is a golden thread... lol. This is exactly correct, at least for Thomas

Above is a link to Big Frank's first and last homerun. As a young player he was practically slim... huge guy but not fat at all. His last homerun he was kind of big.. But I think Vlad this year is about where Thomas was by the end. Vlad last year was about where Bob Hamelin was.

Prince Fielder was obese in his early 20s and it worked for him until about 30.

Cliff Johnson? No idea if he was fat. However if he was his career is like the essence of what a fat guy who had HOF potential can do it himself with Obesity, a bunch of of 100 game 20 homer seasons, when he might of been way better without obesity.

After this weekend, in all of baseball, Vlad is:

1st in WAR (4.1 WAR in 63 games LOL)

1st in wRC+ (203, second place is 184)

1st in wOBA

3rd in batting average (but still 1st in the AL)

1st in RBI (now 6 ahead of 2nd place Devers)

1st in HR (now *2* HR ahead of anyone else) - corrected

1st in OPS

And he's playing a good fist base

40% of the way through the season he's easily been the best player in baseball

Oh

Fangraphs must not have compiled all of yesterday's late games yet

Edit: When I clicked refresh Tatis didn't even show up

Other sites all show Tatis 19 and Vlad 21

You're looking at qualified players, just limit the PA's to 100.

TY

All the more impressive on Tatis Jr's part obviously...

He's missed quite a few games

Dislocated shoulder and Covid twice. Byron Buxton has been exceptional as well, 98 PA's 2.5 fWAR.

And the Red have two guys just ionnfire in Castellanos and Winker

Castellanos has the highest qualified BABIP in the majors at .418. Can probably expect some regression there.

So what does a Vlad Jr extension look like?

I feel like they should get it done this offseason.

Me too

Hard to say

Somewhere between the Acuna Jr and the Tatis Jr contracts

All the juniors! LOL

He sucks again. Trade him.

He's looks pretty tired to me. I'd start giving him some scheduled off days. I'd also consider moving him back to third, in the order not that it should matter but maybe the lineup stuff gets in there head.

There are a couple of off days coming up next week which should help. I'd probably give him another off day this week (just not against Ohtani, baseball deserves to see that... maybe tonight so he's fresh against Ohtani).

Ya. I'm sure it's just fatigue. Once his body/mind snaps out of it I'm thinking he'll go full blitzkrieg.

I think everyone is overthinking this. Vlad is just cold right now, that will happen over a 162 game season. Most players lose their swings far more frequently than this.

And a common reason for that is fatigue.

Games, travel, late night parties

The previous 3 Jays to put up historic 4-5 month runs all faded. Olerud 1993, Delgado 2000 and Bautista 2011.

You could also include Fred McGriff in there who was on track for 40+ homers and an MVP in 1989 but didn't homer his last 25 or 30 games.

Guerrero is fading earlier then they did, which isn't surprising given he is only 22 and still a fairly heavy guy.

4 or 5 scheduled rest days the rest of the way could be helpful. Keep an eye on the exit velocities. They seem down to me. in the last homestand a lot of 385 foot drives to the warning track in center. Not pulling the ball as much, and not enough exit velocity to get it out to center.

Fatigue and injury are definitely common factors, another one is mechanical. You would be amazed how often pro hitters who have been swinging their entire lives unknowingly change one aspect of their swing or approach which can lead to struggles at the plate. It's why these guys drill the same mechanics day after day.

I think they said Vlad was having timing issues at the plate. Of course there are a million things that could factor into this. Players who are fatigued and/or battling nagging injuries go into slumps and players who aren't fatigued or battling nagging injuries also go into slumps (ask Grichuk).

There are people in the organization who get paid a f*** ton of money to figure this s*** out, so I'm going to let them figure it out.

He lost too much weight, needs to get fat again...

Good thing we didn't sign him to a 10 year 390 million dollar contract. Not that any body cares but here is my assessment.

Obesity - not a 280 lbs lard ass again (yet) but not the 240 pound lighting cat he was in June... I would say 255 and getting softer daily. Not sure what to do about this mid season.

Tiredness - high. Exit velocities down a bit I think

Pull dat ball - low. Lots of work for the center fielder.

Solutions - hire Cito (Pull dat ball) expert and a good nutritionist. I'd give him a couple of extra days off but might be hard in a pennant race.

Tonight's expectations - not quite there yet. Expect 2 ground balls, a k, and a 103 mph 395 footer to center (0/4)

Jesus Christ. I blame Krylian, why bump this s*** to listen to this babble.

You don't have to open this thread. If you see it near the top just ignore it.

It's a message board... people post stupid things, people speculate. People on the board are speculating about his weight, his exit velocity, his fatigue on all the other threads anyway.

I've even seen JimCanuck speculating that he was hungover... not sure if that is just a joike or there is some reason for thinking that, like he has friends in LA who he parties with.

Anyway I don't see a problem with using this thread to speculate on why VGJ is slumping... if it's just random and the slump is gone tonight or tomorrow this thread will go inactive too.

2 more ks last night... Vlad is really in a deep slump and it is showing up multiple ways. K'd 6 times in the 4 game series without a single hard hit line drive.

In my opinion he needs a bit of rest as this keeps getting worse and worse. Bo got a couple of days off, Vlad should too. Load management.
