What's the word on Hatch's breaking ball? I haven't noticed one in this inning, but the fastball/changeup combo is impressive.

Jays pitch sequencing right now is driving me crazy....all these hitters getting balls 1 and 2 gifts because our guys insist on throwing first pitch sliders and changeups and end up out of the zone. The Rays know this and just spit on these first offerings.

His curve is still a work in progress. Hatch himself only grades it as below average at the moment

I’m still trying to figure out why, in these early innings, when a guy throws 96mph heat that he’s chucking changeups early in the count when the Rays are clearly uninterested in swinging at the first one

Hatch has a high spin fastball and throws 96, and I don’t think Jansen called for a single fastball up in the zone. Seems weird. That’s where those types of pitches are the most effective.
