King Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 10 of the last 20 games of the season against the Yankees Thanks MLB
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 It's all good, not like those games are gonna get played anyway
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 We start off with 3 against the Rays, followed by 4 against the Nationals, 3 against the Phillies, 3 against the Braves, and 3 against the Red Sox, before finally encountering an easy opponent in the Marlins for only 2 games. It's gonna be tough.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 That schedule looks brutal, but not unexpected given the regional setup. Of course starting in the Trop is just a sick joke from MLB, for a multitude of reasons.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 It was always going to be tough, I don't see anything out of the ordinary regarding what we were already told?
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 Just want to see the kids step up to another level, and Pearson show himself as an ace or an ace in the making.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 I'm not worried. This season will not be completed, and I would wager we will have a bunch of players opting out.

If getting another year service time wasn't reason enough to hold Pearson back for 1 week, the chance the season not even finishing should be be the final straw.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 On the bright side were getting another high pick in next years draft in a basically lost season.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 First 16 games: @Rays @Rays @Rays @Nationals @Nationals vs Nationals vs Nationals vs Phillies vs Philles vs Philles @ Braves @ Braves @ Braves @ Red Sox @ Red Sox @ Red Sox

This wouldn't be the worst outcome at this rate. The Jays have very little chance of making the playoffs without an expanded format, it's only 60 games, and Rob Manfred overseeing health/safety for a major sport during a pandemic sounds like a really, really bad idea. We are seeing that in execution already, and it hasn't even been a week. Only issue of a lost season from a Jays standpoint is we would lose a year of Vlad and Biggio if no season is played or season is cut short. But whatever, can't worry about what we can't control. I want baseball back as much as anyone, but it doesn't sound all that promising right now.

I agree with what you said, save for the bolded part, in a truncated year I believe Toronto is among some teams that could surprise this season.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 One good thing with the schedule is that a couple of weeks in and we'll know if we have any chance of the playoffs. If we lose most games (as on paper we should) hopefully there's more chance of roster decisions being made on looking to the future. E.g. giving people like Merryweather and Borucki starts, Alford in the outfield etc. The kind of moves that probably short term aren't successful, but have a (small) chance of producing an asset for future seasons.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 Alternatively if we ride a hot streak then the season will be really fun!

Pearson + Ryu should be an excellent 1-2 punch, I think big Murph or Murray could surprise, rotation isn't super rock solid but Shoemaker, Roark, Yamaguchi, Anderson, Thornton, Borucki is pretty decent rotation depth. The OF is the most glaring weakness, outside of probably Gurriel. Why they haven't signed Puig already is baffling to me.

Or...they may have no interest in having another hot head latino on the roster just yet.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 Maybe "very little chance" is premature considering we don't know the entire list of who is sitting out yet, and a 60 game season means a hot start by a .500ish team (which is where the Jays probably fall talent wise in 2020) can put them right in the thick of it. Plus "spring training/summer camp" is a joke leading up to the season, so who knows how players will even perform if there is a season. I just see the Jays as more of a 2021-22 team, and the new 2020 schedule is not in our favor. If there was expanded playoffs like there should have been, then it would have been way more fun.

Yeah in such a short season if the elite teams get off to a good start then the race is basically over for any team that has a bad start.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 Do any of you use Sportsnet Now? How is it? I recently moved and my PC and TV are no longer anywhere near each other so I'm debating buying SNNow for the season if it looks like it will actually get under way.

Do you still HAVE a TV subscription? If so, you can probably still access SN through your computer without buying anything additional.

I agree. It looks like a tough schedule on paper, but half those teams could have missing players due to covid. Anything can happen, let’s give it at least 30 games before we write off the season.

Last summer in Sask I was living in a place with no cable and I ended up getting it in April. Not worth the $27.99 as in summer MLB was all I watched and DAZN had most of the non Jays games on their broadcast. If you are paying for a cable package now you can get SN Now though
TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 Isn't it the Rays year to come out of the gate slowly?
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 Even the most optimistic Jays fans (Hi Spanky!) don't believe we'll finish above the Yankees. They had loads of injuries last year and still won 100 games. The divisional split screws us more than most, not just because of our schedule, but teams with easier schedules have a better chance of going on a good run (oh to have Cleveland's fixtures!). So it's going to be extremely hard to grab a wildcard place. Over 35 wins is what you're looking for to have a good chance at a wildcard. A bad start, and it'd take a miracle run for us to recover.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 It's mind-bogglingly stupid that teams that don't even play each other compete for the same playoff spot. If they were going to go with this regional thing they should have set the playoffs up like that too. AL East teams competing with AL Central teams for the same playoff spots is bad enough under normal years with the dumb imbalanced schedule. This year takes the cake.

If you're looking for a way to get your PC to play on the TV from a distance, look into a Chromecast. They're pretty excellent devices for that sort of thing, and pretty cheap as well.

AL East teams competing with AL Central teams for the same playoff spots is bad enough under normal years with the dumb imbalanced schedule. This year takes the cake. Agreed. The current format + unbalanced schedule has been unfair for years. This year it seems more ridiculous because while they don't have a choice other than to have the teams closest to each other in region play each other, the fact remains that the Jays and the White Sox are going to fight for the same WC spot despite having completely different schedules. It's unfair in a normal situation, but in this situation it's amplified. The only way the unbalanced approach would make sense is if they added 2 expansion teams, went back to 2 divisions per league, and eliminated interleague play. Then you can have a schedule that trends towards playing your own division more often, but without making schedules for teams fighting for the same playoff spots be so different in difficulty.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 That would’ve made sense, too bad they couldn’t come into an agreement. I was a big fan of trying the expanded playoffs this year.

No thanks man, I don't want a moron like Puig around these kids trying to be the "veteran leader". There's a lot of optimism around the team right now but they are still building, let one of 5-6 fringe OFers we have try to breakout. It's probably not going to be pretty but I'll take it over Puig for 60 games. The fact that nobody has signed him despite a pretty productive career is pretty telling. He's just not worth the headaches.
