EastCoaster Verified Member Posted February 12, 2020 Posted February 12, 2020 Sources claims that FA Kevin Pillar is close to reaching a deal with the Boston Red Sox. We might possibly see quite a bit of the former Blue Jays CF in 2020.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 Done Deal Kevin Pillar sign a one year contract with the Red Sox for $ 4.25 mil. Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and say that's an overpay for Kevin Pillar.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2020 Posted February 15, 2020 Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and say that's an overpay for Kevin Pillar. Watch him haunt us offensively and defensively.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2020 Posted February 15, 2020 Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and say that's an overpay for Kevin Pillar. Watch him haunt us offensively and defensively. Yet 4 million is f*** all, sick for a potential 2 win player?
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2020 Posted February 15, 2020 Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and say that's an overpay for Kevin Pillar. It's crazy how much people hate kevin Pillar because he's a nice guy. It seems ridiculous. He's a 1.5 to 2 win player if he gets enough playing time. How is that not worth 4 mil especially to organizations with tons of cash. The Red sox paid Panda and Castillo over 100 mil for the pair to produce less than zero wins combined. I highly doubt they will regret paying Pillar 4 million dollars.

He's a fan favourite that makes flashy plays and "tries hard", a classic player that is overrated by people who don't care about analytics. This board hates players like that, because the majority of us are miserable nerds who hate fun.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2020 Posted February 15, 2020 I'm happy the Sox went from superstar Betts to overpaying a mediocre and declining Pillar. Jarrod Dyson had about the same WAR last year and projected for about the same WAR this year, and just signed for less than half the amount.

You're not worried about decline there..lol. You take the last 2 years of WAR of both players and average them out and Dyson is half of Pillar. Pillar at 4 million is not an overpay.

Relative ages of the two players isn't material. Both are potential in season DFA candidates.

Pillar put up almost 2 wins for the Giants. I'd make a bet(a non monetary wager) with you that Pillar won't get DFA'd, but you can't bring yourself to gamble can you. Making a wager where you might lose posting privileges for a month...definite no no...jerking off in public parking places....thumbs up!.....You're a weird duck Jimmy.

He put up 1.5 wins, mainly from HR output and positional adjustment and who knows if the gopher ball is back this season. Dyson put up 1.3 wins in 200 less PA. Pillar has negative DRS two years in a row and negative UZR/100 last season, and his bat was 15% below league average last season. You can make your points without getting personal. And I posted that jerking off in public spaces is not OK, FYI. The issue I had was with the people blowing it out of proportion - MLB suspension, jail time, etc. Ridiculous.

He was a negative WAR player in a handful of bats with the Jays utterly distracted by the fact that he knew he was leaving. He was indeed close to a 2 win player for his time with the Giants. His bat was 7% below league average with the Giants. Regardless, Kevin Pillar is perfectly fine at 4 mil dollars and I'll wager a month worth of posting that he doesn't get DFA'd by Boston this year if you're man enough to accept the bet.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2020 Posted February 15, 2020 I am happy for Pillar that he's getting paid. With this recent contract he's going to have around $15m in earnings for his career. For a 32nd round pick that hasn't been able to hit well his whole career, that is a pretty damn good accomplishment.

The Red Sox has no intention of DFAing Pillar why bother signing him in the first place. Pillar could platoon with JBJ who doesn't hit well against lefty Pillar bring a RH bat to the outfield as the rest of their outfielders are all LH bats. Plus it speculated that Verdugo won't be ready for the season start.

It just JBJ that he could platoon with. And Fangraph said that maybe it would be best to play Pillar in RF on those days because of his declining defense. So Pillar in RF, Verdugo in RF and JBJ takes the day off Vs LHP.

This board hates players like that, because the majority of us are miserable nerds who hate fun. Miserable is the man who never smiled much after making those flashy plays and came across in postgame as very solemn and cross. So speak for yourself, Bob. Pillar was a fan favourite because Canadians like scrappy, come-out-of-nowhere underdogs who don't smile and wind up over-performing (like Mr. Dour himself, Jose Bautista) because Canadians are low-spirited socialists who are suspicious of fun. Plus JBJ has a knack of going hitless for some elongated periods where last year they sat him out for 4-5 games and some he only went in as defensive replacement in the late innings.

No question JBJ needs some Vs LHP. But Benni post just under a .800OPS Vs LHP to go with that .269BA. And there is a good chance the 25 year old is on his way to becoming an all-star. Pillar has a career .766OPS Vs LHP. He was good last year in limited AB Vs LHP, something like .820. But the year before he was .696. He is useful to the Red Sox but I wouldn't be sitting the Red Sox young OFs to get Pillar's okay bat in the lineup Vs LHP. JBJ yes because he has a major weakness Vs LHP.

Chances are better than not that Pillar would put up better defense in left field than Benintendi would as well, so for a team that just traded away their best outfielder Kevin Pillar actually becomes an important platoon player in maximizing their outfield usage.
