Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2019 Posted October 9, 2019 This is such a Rays-type game.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2019 Posted October 9, 2019 That play was pivotal, they're right. But, I'd say getting Altuve at home was, morons.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2019 Posted October 9, 2019 Geez... their pen is crazy deep.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2019 Posted October 9, 2019 The Rays are so exciting. I wish we could have gotten 7 games of this instead of 5, really wish either of these teams went against the Yankees instead of the embarrassment that was the Twins so they could face off in the ALCS.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2019 Posted October 9, 2019 As I said before, the Twins were a good team but vastly overrated due to their division. The Yankees got a lucky break by not getting home field. They got the easier ALDS opponent and homefield doesn't mean as much in baseball as it does in other sports. With that said, hopefully Cole shuts them down the next time.
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted October 9, 2019 Posted October 9, 2019 Rays are going to pull it off.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2019 Posted October 9, 2019 Rays are going to pull it off. If they do, I wonder how the rule changes will affect things next year? You'd have to think a lot of teams would go with openers for one or two rotation spots if they otherwise could.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2019 Posted October 9, 2019 As I said before, the Twins were a good team but vastly overrated due to their division. Weren't you proven to be absolutely wrong in that assertion when you made it or are you choosing to forget that part?

glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2019 Posted October 9, 2019 Weren't you proven to be absolutely wrong in that assertion when you made it or are you choosing to forget that part? They were 41-16 against CWS, DET, and KCR (47-16 counting the Orioles). They were 23-12 in one run games. They were 31-35 with a -43 run differential against plus .500 teams. I mean, the schedule is the schedule, so they deservedly won the Central, but I'm not buying that they were a great team. A good team, sure, but we saw what happened against a great team like the Yankees. A team with Odorizzi as their best SP (who had a really good year but come on) is not a legit top team. I hate the Rays, but I can concede that their pitching staff is really good and their coaching can manipulate situations to their advantage most of the time (openers, etc). The Twins are simply not in that class.

But they could barely tread water against .500+ teams. To be fair though, I wonder what the record for all playoff teams were against .500+ opponents?

I'm too lazy to look up all the playoff teams, but the Yankees were 43-32 against plus .500 teams with a +41 run differential. Keep in mind, they had more injuries than practically every team, and they were turning the Gio Urshela's and Cameron Maybin's of the world into good players. There are levels to this. I said the same thing about the Indians last year who looked ordinary against good teams (I believe they were under .500 against them as well), and the Astros made quick work of them. The playoffs in baseball can be a crapshoot, but when there is a large discrepancy between the quality of two teams, the odds of an upset decrease even with luck factored in. Not impossible, but not as likely. I'm referring to a 5-7 game series, not a one game play in, obviously. Edited October 9, 2019 by glory

Which makes the twins losing 1000 straight playoff games against the yanks even more funny.
