Great win on the road in a tough park.

 

I really hope they look seriously into extending Giles. If they are expecting to be contending for the post-season in 2021, why not keep him - the guy is excelling with the Jays , likes being with the team and has been an excellent team leader down in the BP.

Have to trade Giles IMO, he's our last valuable asset that is expendable. No guarantee he'll still be elite in 2 years or even interested in an extension that isn't a mega deal.

Yup. Last year of his deal, on a team that isn't quite ready to contend, and was traded at the deadline already before Cashman backed out at the last minute. Atkins is going to move him.

This guy is not just a 'reliever'. He has elite stuff and still only 29 yo. OK fine go out and find a dominant closer to acquire in 2 years when this team will hopefully be contending. Yeah that will be expensive in prospect capital -so pay now or pay later. No free lunch. And I sure as f*** wouldn't trust that ass-hat Atkins to get fair value for Giles in an offseason trade -probably will end up with another of his boy-crushes like Drury or Fisher. Now if the Jays actually had a competent GM, yeah then look to trade. Question is what Giles will sign for. I would offer 3/$30M for 2020-22 (includes his last year of 'team control) with a team option of $12M for a 4th year or a 2 M buyout. Pay to play guys.

Have a look at his 2016 and 2018 seasons. He's not infallible.

yes and certainly few players are infallible (other than the few like Trout when healthy). Even Kenley Jansen has been not so great the last couple seasons, and Kimbrel has been putrid in limited action this season. There is certainly risk in signing a closer to a big dollar deal (B.J. Ryan !), but nothing ventured nothing gained.

After signing 2 starters this winter (Roark, Miley) we calculated that the Jays would be a ~86 win team prior to adding a third baseman in 2020.

 

There's really no reason to give up on next season.

BJ Ryan blew out his arm. 100 Miles Giles is a good candidate to do the same. Relievers are so volatile they should be the last acquisitions of a team entering the contending phase on the win curve.

You're assuming Atkins will turn him into anything of value. Read the rumors. Probably 3 more 5th starter types coming this way

Who cares? People acted like Bautista was a horrible human because of a bat flip and because he saw how bad umps were. They are who they are, Gardner is a hard nosed intense guy. Humans have emotions.
