Blue Jays, Randal Grichuk agree on five-year, $52-million extension

Definitely a contract that has aged poorly. At the time, I saw the case for it, but Randal has trended the opposite direction.

Not like it’s an albatross or anything. 2 more years left at $9M per. Could probably move him if we eat some of it, but our CF depth beyond Springer would be severely compromised. At least Grichuk has filled in adequately for Springer on defense.

Yeah in the grand scheme of things it’s hardly Vernon Wells but Grichuk is really turning to garbage at this point so it’s funny to revisit. I didn’t like the deal but didn’t mind him coming into the season (considering we were stuck with him) but he’s poo now and not sure it’ll change

This is Grichuk's reminder that he needs to have a blistering September to make up for the last 3 months of garbage. It will be worth it.

Grichuk is in one of his slumps which I assume he'll break out of and settle in as what he always is. He can play as a 4th OFer, even at his salary, for the next two years but he also doesn't fit the roster because we have no lefties in the OF. He'd be best suited to play over a left handed hitter when we face a LHP but since we don't have one he's kind of an awkward piece.

I'm not using hindsight, his posts were pretty good, especially about the front loading of the contract, this deal wasn't terrible man.

I wouldn’t either in your case

Great bump minion, you get a star.

We’ll he’s getting to be pretty putrid at this point, trending towards sub .700 OPS.

Needed to be determined where everyone stood on the deal. Like if Deadpool started complaining about RG if the game thread, can be like: how about that “f*** yeah” you wrote when they signed him lol

You win the Message Board on this day, sir. I respectfully withhold any further comments on the subject.

Is there any evidence Grichuk is prone to slumps? Technically is his standard deviation greater than other hitters?

Vladimir Guerrero jr hit .350 with a .490 on base percentage in April... then in June he was like prime McGuire, then in August he hit something like .240 and probably had an almost 4 week stretch between August 2 and Aug 30 (before his 2 homer game Monday) with a sub .300 slugging.

Teoscar Hernandez won player of the week then went like 3 for 40 or something. George Springer was injured, then a dissapointment then he won back to back player of the week.

So if Randal is true talent .240 .290 .450, his bad months will be like .150 .225 .300 and good .300 .350 .600... but that's not too weird. Everyone else goes up and down around their averages for weeks at a time within a season.

So is it just that Randal is a bad hitter so his bad months make it seem way worse? Or is there actual proof he has more variation than the average hitter?

That opening section with the horns and s*** is legit. Aside from maybe Steel Dragon's "Stand up and Shout", maybe the most iconic opening ever.
