That hits my fantasy squad pretty hard, I'm shallow on SP in my keeper league and the waiver wire is thin.

FanGraphs is now counting pitch framing in their WAR calculation. Russell Martin is now 10th all time in catcher fWAR right behind Brian McCann. In 2018 our fWAR leader at 2.2 fWAR was Luke Maile.

Only as a hitter, despite being traded Happ had the highest fWAR as a Jay last season with 2.3.

We really were terrible last year!

Michael Fulmer needs TJS. Just when you thought it couldn't suck any less to be a Tigers fan.

I guess Daniel Norris wins that final spot now.

TIL Luke Maile was worth almost as much as Buster Posey in half the plate appearances.

Turns out the mailman is much better than anyone ever thought?!

Maybe, but it seems more likely that it's not being accounted for well (kind of a lesser version of that time Lawrie broke WAR).

He definitely passes the eye test of an excellent defensive catcher, framing included. It's no surprise that the team values him highly, and he has supposedly acted as a good mentor to Danny Jansen.

I went straight to Ryan Doumit's fangraphs page.

Was not disappointed. Woof.

And Buster Posey was a 10.4 WAR catcher in 2012? Jesus Christ.

This inclusion made Ryan Doumit the 2nd least valuable player since 1940.

Yadier Molina is now the second best defender of all time. Not exactly surprising tbh, but really puts it into perspective.

Jesus. I just sorted by 220 PA's and learned that the top catcher in baseball are:

1. Grandal - 4.9. What a steal for the Brewers to get him for 1 yr $18M

2. Realmuto - 4.8

3. Alfaro - 3.1. I know the BABIP will plummet, but his defense is really good. If he ever hits, the Marlins did good to take a chance on him.

4. Stassi - 2.6

5. Cervelli - 2.6

6. Flowers -2.5

7. Gomes - 2.5

8. Posey - 2.4

9. Yadi - 2.3

10. Hedges - 2.2. SD does everything they can to replace this guy...

11. Maile - 2.2

Catchers below Maile include Ramos, Zunino, Sanchez, Willson Contreras (0.9 - who now appears to be s*** with framing included), Sal Perez (0.6 - ditto)

Holy s***. I think his career WAR was in the low 30's before this change. I know he was behind Jason Kendell.

He went from about 38 fWAR to 53. His brother, the framing god himself, jumped to 17 career WAR as a 64 wRC+ hitter.

Hopefully this is the end of people complaining about Yadier Molina being regarded as a future Hall of famer.

Yeah Contreras tanked and Salvador Perez's entire career should basically be re-evaluated lol, great defensive catcher except at that one aspect that is so valuable.

Holy s*** - this makes it look like Sal Perez is pure s***. 2018 Maile would be the 2nd best of Sal's career, who's now only been worth 1.0+ WAR twice in his career.

I remember a certain someone on here getting laughed at when he brought up pitch framing value a few years back, lol. *cough* JF&S *cough*

Bregman gets $100m guaranteed and then hits the market at age 30. Probably a good move on his part. 100 mil is 100 mil.
Posted
When would he have become a free agent? Good for him for getting the guaranteed money, seems like an unreal steal for the Astros as well.

Agreed, very good both ways.

After seeing Mookie Bett's arb years where he's going to get close to 20 mil a year for 3 years I feel like Bregman did leave a good chunk of change out there. This deal buys out 2 FA years too which is probably going to take him out of the 10 year Machado-like extension when he hits FA. That said, he has yet to hit a gigantic payday and 100 mil is a lot of guaranteed money to turn down. Seems like a reasonable deal for both sides but I like this for the Astros.

As an example, imagine if Vlad Jr. signed something like this after putting up 12 WAR in his first 2+ seasons. We'd be ecstatic.
