glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 I actually think Fisher has some upside with the bat (especially if he improves his launch angle). With that said, you guys are fooling yourself if you don't see a bat first profile in him. He does have speed, so he won't be Kendrys on the base paths (hopefully), but again, he's going to be a player whose bat determines what he's doing five years from now. That's where the upside is. Not the glove. The only reason Alford is even talked about at this point is he's (allegedly) a capable defensive CF. If Fisher could do that, then this wouldn't be a discussion. I'll agree with the main point mentioned here, and that is our OF sucks. Sign/trade for a real CF this winter and this discussion changes quickly.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 I've been wondering this too. Fisher has graded out as a plus outfielder and average baserunner in almost a full season of MLB time. I haven't seen a single game of his, but I'm pretty sure people are overreacting to him losing a ball in the sun and having it hit him in the face. He's had a number of balls he's lost and looked bad on, and others where he's looked fantastic. The talent is definitely there. I still think he's just not seeing some balls.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 If Joe Maddon somehow gets canned this year, Shapiro better be all over that s***.

Slade Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 If Joe Maddon somehow gets canned this year, Shapiro better be all over that s***. I like this idea, it makes a lot of sense. We are just a Joe Maddon away from a WS. Are they going to be in on Cole? No.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 Are they going to be in on Cole? Lol No. Why? I certainly hope the Jays kick tires on Cole, that would be utterly stupid to not try and get arguably the best pitcher in the game. Now whether he kicks the Jays to the curb is a different story, we certainly have the money, my answer is yes, bones.

I don't need to stab myself in the eye with a rusty screwdriver to know it'll hurt. And I don't need to wait until the offseason plays out to know that Shapiro/Rogers/Atkins won't be pursuing Gerrit Cole. But ok.... Let's wait and see anyway.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 https://blogs.fangraphs.com/oliver-drake-changed-his-game-and-found-a-home/ Surprised we couldn't find some innings for Drake this year. He's been worth 0.5 WAR+ for 3 straight years now.

I'm going with the side of history. These types of FA's do not sign in Toronto. And no, I don't consider a token 5 year, $125M offer as being 'in on him'.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 You guys just want to hear that the Jays tried for him?

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 You guys just want to hear that the Jays tried for him? That was bones question, no? I don't think Cole will come here, but I'm sure we have the money to entice him, or make him think twice. He's exactly what this team needs.

I don't think anyone expects him to come here, but I'll still be annoyed if I don't hear that Shatkins has offered him like $210 million.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 I don't think anyone expects him to come here, but I'll still be annoyed if I don't hear that Shatkins has offered him like $210 million. I would imagine that it's not some small investment of time and resources to put together a formal MLB contract offer to a big free agent. If it's patently obvious that Cole would not ultimately sign in Toronto, then no, I don't think Shatkins is under some moral obligation to make him a competitive offer. In that case they should focus their time and efforts on acquisitions that are at least remotely possible. To do anything else is just PR.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 He asked if the Jays would be in on Cole, not the result. And like I said, what's your definition of 'in on'. Making a phonecall? Fine. Every team in the league will be 'in on' Cole. But I'm talking about a serious run at him. There will be no serious attempt there.

Well, sure that's good, if the asking price is astronomical, I'm sure they'll throw their hat in the ring.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 Who could outbid the Jays if they really wanted him in an overpay?

glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 He's a Boras guy right? So he'll want more than Price (7/217) on a seven year deal, or more AAV than Greinke (6/206, $34m aav) on a six year deal. That's usually how Boras operates, wanting to beat the previous high. Anyone who thinks Shatkins will go anywhere near there are in for a disappointment.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 Who could outbid the Jays if they really wanted him in an overpay? Very few. But I don't see them wanting to overpay. I feel that the Vernon Wells extension really left a bad taste in their mouth and they haven't been gung ho about getting into 9 digit deals again. Can I back that up? Not with anything concrete other than they haven't done it since. I don't think that's by accident. Remember, Rogers isn't really doing that well right now. Look at how they're canning all their high paid TV/radio personalities. That NHL deal has been a complete bomb. I don't know how much that impacts future payroll, but it is a consideration.

Giants, Braves, Tigers have money but no one is going there, Nationals, Yankees, Red Sox, Cardinals, Twins have money but won't spend it, Dodgers, Rangers, Angels, Cubs, Orioles have money but LOL, Astros, A's won't spend,
