I somewhat feel that Atkins might be egging him into retirement; if so, fap.

Yeah, egging on, aka getting a reputation for disrespecting veteran players, is going to go a long ways to helping the Jays sign future free agents. Well done. Come out public and hand a job to a rookie before camp begins. I'm sure that won't get to his head. Keep those young guys hungry and motivated by handing them the keys to the new sports car.

I see posts like this all the time, but I don't think it's human nature to start slacking as soon as you're given an opportunity to prove your worth. The idea that Gurriel is suddenly going to stop trying to be the best baseball player he can be because he's given a lot of playing time to start the season is pretty silly.

Tulo has been dealing with this injury as well as others for the last few years. Even dealing with these issues he put up a 3 win season in 2016. He's always been an above average defender, despite the issues he likely was dealing with while on the field.

Now how is Tulo feeling health wise at this moment in time? I have no idea. Everyone knows that the guy has had injury problems and the risks that are associated with him. Atkins could have used more ambiguous language. Pissing off your highest paid player, who should be providing leadership for a young group of guys, is a terrible way of going about things.

Lol ok, you go ahead and die on the Troy Tulowitzki hill I guess. God forbid we piss off a guy that's barely played the last two years and sucks even when he does.

Hey, I realized that Tulo was really good in 2012! Maybe we can expect him to return to that kind of form. Time is just a number.

You here these comments from baseball commentators who have played the game. The guys on NBA radio were talking about this just the other day. You give the young guy playing time before they're ready, they are far less willing to accept the wisdom of veteran guys who have made all the mistakes they go through. They feel like they're the man. It also puts added pressure on younger players. It has nothing to do with effort.

Regardless, Tulo should be given every opportunity to show what he has if he's healthy. Even if he's healthy he's going to get days off. Gurriel can play second. Tulo will get a lot of games at DH if he's healthy. There are plenty of at bats for both guys to be had.

You don't think the ultra competitive Tulo isn't going to upset reading those comments? How does that help a clubhouse.

There's nothing wrong with a 3 win player in 131 games and that's what Tulo put up in 2016. He put that up without 100% health. Yeah, I'm old and I like cheering for the old underdog. It's not like I'm betting my house that Tulo's going to return to being an above average player in 2019, but I don't think the chances of that happening are 0%.

The chances of Tulo being an above average player are zero percent. Zero.

The chances of him even playing half a season are probably close to 10 percent.

Don't wanna piss off that guy!! He's a cornerstone!

He'll get the first shot...

If he's healthy, you have to start him. But f*** the chances that he's any way decent or can stay healthy are slim.

I think I read an article that said the ankle injury was pretty gruesome.

the gruesome ankle injury was back in July 2017. It should have ZERO effect on him. If he is working out with his old University team he should report to camp in decent shape. If you can push the salary out of your mind the guy was an absolute gamer and an easy guy to cheer for. Do I think he is the teams answer at SS? NO, but in a season where there will be very little reason to watch the team right out of the gate the Tulo story is one that I can get behind.

If Tulo can come out of the gate healthy and be successful, another team might be willing to roll the dice on him. It looked like Ryan Zimmerman was done a couple of years ago, but had a huge 2017 season and was still relatively decent in 2018 when he was on the field.

If Tulo has a productive 2019 season with the bat, you could move him to first base or DH in 2020, with Smoak and Morales both gone. Next year his contract isn't that absurd if he returns to his 2015/2016 form - at $14M. If he's stubborn and won't move to 1B or become the everyday DH, he'll likely retire and that would free the Jays from his contract.

I doubt any of this is going to come to pass.

Same here. The chances of Tulo ever staying healthy over 130-140 games and contributing a 2 WAR season again likely will never happen. I do think if he's healthy and has a solid spring training where he has done enough to earn a roster spot, you have to give him a shot for the month of April, albeit with a very short leash.

Very interesting comments, seeing as Tulo said he'd retire if he's not the starting SS just last season when he called for a presser.

Never heard him say the word retire, just that he would "go home."

He'd be monumentally stupid to give up 40 million dollars

And if he unilaterally decides to "go home" he will be in default of the contract. But ya, he's not going to risk losing the money lol

Yeah, I added two links on what he said after that post, "I just said I'm a shortstop. If someone is better than me, I'll pack my bags and go home", how else are we to take that comment? I doubt he leaves that money as well, fwiw.

If he could somehow take PEDs undetected, he might. Only incentive for him would be to protect his legacy.

Jeff Blair just now on SN Central (paraphrasing)suggested the Jays and Tulo are working on a buyout according to his source, the Jays have moved on. Of course this is Jeff Blair, but it makes sense from the OP's post about meeting with his agent at the WM this week, we shall see how this evolves. Couldn't find any video yet.

Edit: Atkins' meeting his agent tomorrow... stay tuned!

The comments from Shatkins make perfect sense now.

The plan was/is to leverage Tulo's fundamental desire to be a starting SS into him accepting a buyout. Jays will get out of some of the financial commitment and Tulo will get a chance to sign somewhere else (maybe) as a starting SS. Not sure where though.
