John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 meh - you're probably right. I just see no need to make s*** up and speech with such conviction about it when there's factual things he could talk about (if he wasn't a dinosaur). I guess the general public likes that kinda stuff. "Oh - isn't that interesting. A pitcher and a catcher are talking about how to get hitters out in the dugout. What a great young leader that Vasquez guy is because he's doing his job. I'm entertained." It's just filling time... and honestly, we stat heads are still a huge minority of MLB fans. The 55+ year olds that Buck was talking to probably really enjoyed his amazing insight into the game, regardless if it was made up or not. Me, i would have approached it differently, and said something like... "well they could be talking about upcoming hitters in the next inning, or what restaurant they're going to after the game... who knows?" that would foster some nice back and forth with Dan - who would naturally then have asked "what did you talk about during the games in your day.. was it more about the game itself or other things?" THIs then gives Buck the chance to be both informative and funny if he wants to be with his reply "most of the time we were talking about the game and focused on what was happening, but sometimes... sometimes we would talk about *insert non game related story here*"

That's gold right there.

I studied journalism/broadcasting in college, and play-by-play and colour is what I did for a while locally. Dan O'Toole was actually my roommate when we both worked in Fort McMurray on the radio up there doing the morning show.

It was 1999-2000 when I lived up there, Dan did the play by play that year and I did the on-ice stuff between periods, player interviews... I mean it was Jr A level so not like HNIC or anything, but up there with pretty much 90% of the population being 20-45 male.... hockey was a big deal and the radio listenership was and still is pretty huge. Scotty Upshall was on the team (Fort McMurray Oil Barons) that year and tore the entire league apart. they went 52-12 that year, won their league and then the national Jr A Royal Bank Cup.
