Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2018 Posted February 8, 2018 Well, whatever the purpose, the model is f***ed.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted February 8, 2018 Posted February 8, 2018 Eloy at #79! This list is so bad I am actually angry at it. Isn't being mad at math just wrong? The system does appear to be a little broken but for gods sake the Cards have to give Carson Kelly a chance to at least become Realmuto or better.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2018 Posted February 8, 2018 I just realized Brendan Rodgers also didn't make KATOH's Top 100. lol "A name I'm familiar with is not present, therefore it is trash!"
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2018 Posted February 8, 2018 It's not really passing itself off to be a legitimate top 100 list though. It's a list of "here are the guys who did statistically well at a significant level or age and project the best by my model", I think that's fun and he's not being condescending about it. Don't see any reason to bash it unless you have actual quips and improvement suggestions with his model.

It's useful to find potential sleepers, which I think is the point. Just like any other system, keep in mind its strengths and weaknesses and it can provide another useful viewpoint.

Dinger is just stuck in the way where he thinks that if a top 100 isn't near identical to every other top 100, it's garbage. I mean, it makes sense for Kelly to be that high. He isn't sexy but there's a pretty high floor there and he's major league ready. KATOH isn't perfect but there are a lot of guys it catches that scouts ignore. A lot of scouts stat scout anyway. Has a lot changed with Bichette since he was drafted? He apparently still has an unscouty swing but now he's top 20 just because he put up great numbers. It's pretty rare that scouts are in on players who have good "tools" but haven't put up numbers and when they are, they're almost always wrong.

I wouldn't use it as on the same ranking algorithm as say Baseball America, but it's good at pointing out overlooked minor leaguers whom can prove to be valuable. IIRC big ones they hit on were Greg Bird and Tommy Pham.
