Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2018 Posted March 21, 2018 I'd much prefer Dermody, but I guess this is about SP depth.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2018 Posted March 22, 2018 Gaviglio to the Jays, Dermody DFA'd. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/03/blue-jays-acquire-sam-gaviglio-from-royals.html That's a pretty nifty upgrade. Dermody is pretty worthless as all he can do is pitch in relief and he's not even good at it. Gaviglio isn't good either but he could provide replacement level to slightly above replacement level WAR as a SP. Stuff could play up in the pen perhaps.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2018 Posted March 22, 2018 Didn't cost us anything for some depth Of course it did. The deal was literally for cash considerations.

He was drafted in the fifth round in 2011 by the St. Louis Cardinals. While generally decent in their system he never quite gained traction as a top prospect and had nagging injury issues. After posting a 4.28 ERA in 137 innings in Double-A in 2014, he was traded to the Mariners. He’s spent the last two and a half seasons in the high minors for Seattle with decent results, posting a 3.71 ERA with a 50/14 K/BB in 63 innings in Triple-A last year and a 3.31 ERA with a 16/3 K/BB in 33 innings this season. He also started one game for Italy this spring in the World Baseball Classic, giving up two runs and five hits in 4.2 innings. Gaviglio is listed at 6-2, 195, born May 22nd, 1990. A ground ball pitcher, he doesn’t throw especially hard, topping out at 91, and relies a lot on his slider and change-up. There’s nothing spectacular about him but he throws strikes and keeps the ball down. Long relief seems like the role for him.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2018 Posted March 22, 2018 They do test. But you don't need PEDs to run. Has anyone ever been suspended in the NBA for PED use? I don't think so which tells me they aren't really testing.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2018 Posted March 22, 2018 Buck - It's late September, and Pillar has kept it up all year. He still has an outside shot at the batting title, he just got his 200th hit, and he's just had an unbelievable season. Pat - It's really been incredible. Even the advanced stats love him now. Our statistician tells us he has almost 6 WAR. That's 5th in the league. Buck - Only negative, is his defence is declining. Only 5 runs above average, and he was at 20 a few years ago. Thanks to an astute fan Mikeleelop for pointing that out. Pat - It's because he dives and it's going to cost him in the MVP voting. Everyone I talked to said they probably won't even put him in their top 10. Even though he's top 5 by our old drunk x-player standards, and by fangraphs we just can't vote for him Buck - Yeah. Thanks to Mikeleelop for making that point. Pillar has the surprise season of a generation, with his hit tool now at 70, is slightly above average in centerfield, but we won't vote for him in the MVP contest. Pat - he just dives to much. Common sense. lulz... why I love olerud.
vdubmvp Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2018 Posted March 22, 2018 Ah, one more damn week. I can't believe the regular season is finally almost here. This offseason was especially brutal.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2018 Posted March 22, 2018 Is it bad that i took a day off of work for opening day?
vdubmvp Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2018 Posted March 22, 2018 Is it bad that i took a day off of work for opening day? Not at all. Plus, now it's a four day weekend for you so I'd say that you definitely made a very good decision.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2018 Posted March 22, 2018 https://www.sports-reference.com/blog/professional-sports-leagues-steroid-policies/ So every NHL and NBA player is tested 0-3 or 0-4 times a year. I wonder what % of those players get the 0. Baseball gets grilled over PED use to the point that the government gets involved, but NBA players, who are probably the biggest, strongest, most athletic men on earth aren't using PED's? (it's speculation, but only R.Lewis in 2009 was reported to have elevated testosterone, while everyone else was suspended for weed, hard drugs or diet pills?) Only 2 NHL players in history have been caught? Utter nonsense. I guess it's a good thing the NHL doesn't test for cocaine, or the league would have to fold.
