Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 At some point, you just have to admit that he's a very good starting pitcher that is a huge part of this team. I don't think we're at that point. His career DIPS are league average. His ERA is good due to suppressed HR rates and good GB tendencies, but unless he significantly improves his K-BB%, he's never going to be "very" good, he's going to be a solid mid-rotation guy... which I think he is. Nothing about his statistical profile indicates that he is going to keep posting ERAs that are a full run better than his DIPS going forward. I see the two meeting in the middle. If we are lucky, his command will improve gradually and he'll be Brandon Webb.
onwego Verified Member Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 Of Didi's 9 home runs, all have been hit at home, only 3 have exceeded 400 feet (longest 416), and 3 have been under 350 feet. I mean, they're going out, but... so your count is that he has zero, thanks for telling us.

Basically loan sharking MILB players in financial need. I actually have no sympathy for Mejia in this case and I hope he loses, from a legal perspective. He could be a total bust, never make $5M in his career, and never have had the money to pay those medical bills. If his career earnings are $1M, then he doesn't have to repay the money he was given, so it really cuts both ways. He ought to have reasonably known that 10% of his future earnings was potentially many times more than the money he received upfront. The amount of money he was given up front was also at his discretion and based on a % that he agreed to.

I mean, they're going out, but... His swing is just tailored for that park. I'm terrified when he steps up because hes a dead pull hitter and it doesn't take much to get out. He doesn't even hit the ball that hard his average exit velocity is 87.88 which is well below the average of 89.08. And his career exit velocity is even lower than that.

Oh I get it, it just seems like that whole concept, which targets MILB players specifically... just seems scummy to me.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 Oh I get it, it just seems like that whole concept, which targets MILB players specifically... just seems scummy to me. It seems inherently racist in that it predominantly targets players from Latin America who come from poor socioeconomic classes and desperately need money upfront, but it's really just a form of insurance. I could see a player saying to himself, "I think I'm going to make $100M in my career, and if I do, then $90M is plenty to live off of. If I don't, then maybe it's best if I take this $400K up front." It's a hedge. At any rate it's apparently better than what they could get in a line of credit from a major bank, otherwise they would go that route.

I suppose if MILB players made more than Chinese sweatshop workers, the whole thing wouldn't even be needed.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 Ozzie Albies has a chance to tie/break the MLB record for most extra base hits before April 30. Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2018 Posted April 28, 2018 (edited) Gregorius takes Parker yard in the top of the 10th! Edited April 28, 2018 by Spanky99
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2018 Posted April 28, 2018 Didi Gregorius is unreal. Also, holy s*** at the number of Yankees fans at the Angels game. Didi just came out for a curtain call in a park he's visiting on the other side of the country. Lol, "let's go Yankees" chants ringing loud and clear.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2018 Posted April 28, 2018 Ohtani hit another home run before being taken out.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2018 Posted April 28, 2018 The Angels lose to a 10th inning homerun from Gregorious. He joins Trout with 10 homers for the season.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted April 29, 2018 Posted April 29, 2018 Rays win again! 12-6 victory over the Red Sox! Rays are now a shocking 9-1 since their nadir at 3-12.. suddenly, I'm having 2011 flashbacks again on this Rays team. And with 3 against the Tigers after this Red Sox series, suddenly the East is looking a lot more competitive.. at the expense of Boston, New York and Toronto.. and it makes me fear they're going to screw with us again at the Trop next weekend. Sox, despite the Toronto series, have cooled off dramatically.. dropping 5 of their last 7. It's not just Toronto struggling after a hot start.. and meanwhile, the Yankees are soaring. And the O's season is basically over.. cue the Machado to Yankees/Cubs/Phillies/wherever rumors..

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted April 29, 2018 Posted April 29, 2018 And the Bucs take the lead over the Cards. The Pirates are a team to watch.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted April 29, 2018 Posted April 29, 2018 Looks like another long night for the Angels bullpen ahead, as Garret Richards is imploding, with no help from his defense as Cozart and Maldonando committed errors in the 1st.. 5-0 already as Andujar just hit a double.. It's the last thing the Angels need..
